I have a character at a location, not bordering the sea. But the sea can be seen, as well as a boat passing by. Should the name and type of that boat be seen? Or does being in a location not bordering water exclude seeing properly?

You can only see ship names if you're on a coast.

Is that an intended gameplay mechanic, or something up for suggestion? With the advent of telescopes and radios and such, inland locations aren't as remote as they used to be.

I think it's a good suggestion (if someone make a suggestion of it)

As long as you see the ship on the overview you should also be able to see what type of ship it is with your eyes, and also the name with binoculars or telescope.
