making alcohol, pot still requirements

My char tries to make alcohol. It's not the first time, the steel-fashioned pot still worked fine 200+ days ago. Add corn, wood and water and out comes 250 alcohol, just like it says in the wiki. Other plantmaterials like potatoes, wood and barley could have worked as well but today, suddenly the machine has transformed! Instead i'm asked to add grape juice, wort or amazake (or ...).
The main concern is the pot still suddenly became unusable cos i don't have the resources.

On a related incident another char found a pile of amazake in her own locked building, this happened some 50 days ago. This resource would have been swapped by the program for some other resource, which i do not recall i'm sorry to say. Amazake is made from rice which doesn't grow there and it wouldn't end up in a locked building.

The system of alcohol production is switched to a less water intensive and more consistent one. Pot stills are now set up to accept the immediate precursors of beer, wine, cider and sake.
The materials you used to process can still be processed. In order to use grains (wheat, rye, barley, sorghum, corn), malt them in a bucket (this is possible now) and turn it into wort with a press. If it's a terrible obstacle to build a press, the project could be moved to the bucket, too.
In order to process potatoes, turn baked potatoes into mash in a bucket and distill them in the pot still.
In addition to these materials, alcohol production from grapes, apples and rice is now also possible so that materials usable to make drinking alcohol can now be used to make fuel alcohol as well.

I'm sorry for any inconveniences this change might cause, but it was necessary for a balanced fuel system and I hope these changes might be beneficial for some people, too.

As a side effect, beer can now be made from any grain, not just barley.

If you have amazake that appeared out of nowhere, it used to be rye. PM me with the location and I'll fix it.

You couldn't just reduce the water?

Some people built pot stills specifically because of the old projects, in order to make alcohol for the upcoming fuel requirement. Now you change things to screw up the costs and benefits of various machines. Not cool.

Well, if you don't have access to propane or petrol, you will need the pot stills anyway. If you do have access, what made you think that pot stills would be more effective? It has clearly been stated that consumption rates won't be the ones you find in the wiki.

I'm really sorry I wasn't able to release the relevant information earlier, but the impact should be minimal. You should still be able to produce alcohol with your existing equipment (only the press might pose a problem, but that can be changed) and the relative effectivenesses would have been changed anyway, either by modifiying the projects themselves or tweaking the consumption rates of the engine.

Have to agree with Chris on that one, unless it was announced somewhere that the requirements would change significantly as this has. I am sure that I am not the only one who has had characters build machinery built around the previous way of making alcohol (well) and especially when those charries are not in a town where they have the luxury of wasting resources on something that isnt as viable now....it is kind of frustrating.

Anyways </rant> off now...

Now, as frustrating as it may be, I do see the beneficial upside to it so eh, score one for creating an in game challenge!

Exactly. I don't want hand-outs...

Whoa whoa whoa, speak for yourself there, I want handouts, lots and lots of handouts!

Like I said, I'm sorry I couldn't give you any previous information. I originally intended to announce the final changes a month ago, but the creative process was unexpectedly laboriuos.

Anyway, there is absolutely no reason to panic. If it turns out that alcohol has become to hard to get, it is no problem to modify the engine consumption rates so that your alcohol lasts longer. You should keep in mind though that alcohol is supposed to be ineffective by design, since it can be made almost everywhere.

Piscator, I was just simply ranting the first portion of my post there, the changes are not so ground breaking that people should have to worry so much...and the machinery that was built isn't exactly gonna go to waste...

I found that to be humorous for a completely different reason.

Exactly. My char has just journeyed all over to get barley and potatoes...
Why couldn't you have given a wrning that this was coming?

You do realise you can still make alcohol from barley and potatoes?

Yes, there is an extra step or two, but all you need is a bucket (and an oven, for the potatoes). The pot still still makes alcohol from those resources, so your trip is not wasted.

Maybe he could have saved the trip, since he has rice at his location?

Anyway, I'm terribly sorry for any inconveniences caused by our slow information policy. I wished I could have given out information earlier, but it wasn't possible. What Surly said is right though, you can still use your materials even though the process has become more complicated.
