There's a map called "EDITED BY PD ", whose image is stored on Photobucket. The account is inactive, so it won't display, but the pic is still there. Would it be possible to find and replace
EDITED BY PD: This map has to be found ingame. Alf
with a copy uploaded to Cantr, for continuity? I'd hate to lose such a good map (it's not mine).

Why would an existing IC map need the link to an external source to be displayed?

I'm not sure what you mean. I believe the creator of the map (set to be uneditable) uploaded the image to an external site instead of Cantr. So when their PhotoBucket account went inactive, it affected characters in-game.

And that's why images should be uploaded to the database. I have to ask PD Chair if restoring the image would be acceptable or a breach.

I totally agree. I found another map on the same account. I'll PM you with the details.

I remember someone posted a working copy in-game after it stopped working, so the image already exists on the server, all the notes are just linking to the timed out image on Photobucket.

Would it be something to consider to have all external images hosted and converted internally? And then linking to external images blocked? Images, especially maps, could potentially be updated externally without character having to collect newer maps.

Sounds like a good idea... although I assume it would need to be done by hand.

Restoring broken images (if possible) would not be a breach, since there is no way to break an image in-character (except to delete it).

Then it should just be done on a case by case basis, as problems are reported. No need to create more work than is requested...although it would be interesting to see how many externally hosted images there are. I suppose such a search would probably lag the server horrendously.
How hard would it be to block all externally hosted images?

Another thing to add to the TOS.

In this case, I also do not feel it will be a breach as the external picture is a link to a map that actually exist in game.... but situations like this needs to be consider on a case by case basis....

Btw there are a lot of really nice maps in game that are much bigger than the cantr max image size, would be a great loss if they were all chucked overboard. In the polish area there are numerous ones like that, also the older islands.

Cogli, there's an easy way to walk the size restriction around - just cut the large image in smaller ones, and put them together on a note. I've seen several maps done that way (yes, in PZ

)

Big-ass maps are annoying to read. People could chuck the having to go exactly up to scale and make 1) a sailing map that only contains the coastal towns and maybe some inland towns that trade with coastal towns and is small enough to read comfortably and 2) inland traveling map that's broken into sectors like map books irl and 3) world map that's small enough to fit the screen.
