when you are navigating a boat...why must it be so confusing? there is no compass...up isnt north...down isnt south...or at least it doesnt appear this way...

Yes, I know wot you mean.
North, souhth etc. differes per place I think, cauz I got 3 boats and wot's north for 1, is south for the other it seems.
But once you find out what north/south/west /east for you is, the fun begins!

I think it was mentioned in another one of the forums that the maps are indeed off center, and that north is no longer north but east..or something to that effect.

I did a quick search for the map direction explaination, but couldn't find it and need to run off to work. Would someone mind putting a link to the right topic here?

It depends with the other topic was posted.
At one point north was up.
Currently things have reverted to north being right always.
The reversion happened months ago.

The fact that north is not up is due to some mistake I made when drawing hte very first map of Cantr, two years ago

... Since then, we have had a period in which the map was correctly printed, but then when we changed hosting providers we couldn't do this for technical reasons. As soon as we can again, the maps will be rotated again.

Speaking of boats, does the amount of weight on a boat cause it to slow down considrably? Because I have a long boat, and it moved fine empty, but with some passengers and food on board, I don't think it's moved one inch from where I undocked.

I'd assume it does. My longboat goes pretty slowly, but it's packed to the gills with supplies--a boat one of my characters is on moves EXTREMELY slowly because it's got 3 people and scads of supplies on it. Walking would be faster.

Walking could be faster, but who wants to do that?

And the only thing anyone needs to do to orient the maps to north is give it a mental 1/4 turn counter clockwise, the compass directions are fine as long as you take into account that the maps are oriented west instead of north like everyone is used to.

I like how north is where east should be...it's cool...cantr doesn't have to be exactly like RL...that's just me though...

North (direction 0) is to the right, so the map is essentially rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Just remember that when doing coordinates.

Correctly printed? In the real world, North is generally excepted as up on maps. But this aint the real world. In Cantr, west is up.
