Forum log in

Lately, I often experience a problem with logging in onto the forum, and I wonder whether other people have similar experiences: often when I log in, it accepts my password, but the screen is still as if I am not logged in (e.g. with a log in button). But if I log in again, and then use the "posts since last visit" button, the list is empty - i.e. it does register it as me logging in, but I'm not actually logged in. Since I rely heavily on the "posts since last visit" system, this is quite annoying.

Odd seeing you asking questions.

I have experienced the same thing a couple of times here and
on most other boards I have ever been on.
What causes it? I haven't a clue, but someone around here should.

This is what happens:
- your logon request has been received and processed by the server.
- the resulting index page has not been sent (and received) by the time the user stops waiting and requests another internet page.
- because the request has been processed, the time of your latest visit has been set to the time of this no-response-request.
- the next time you log on only the posts since that new time (your 'latest visit') will be 'new'.

But I don't stop waiting and go to another page - this is happening when I log in, wait, and get back to the forum page, without clicking anywhere other than log in :) ...

Well, just gauging how widespread this is or what may be causing it ;-) ... Besides, I'm a developer of Cantr, but not of phpBB :) ...

I originally posted something similar to this:

Yes, it might be related - although again, it's not a hanging login ... the login *appears* to work fine, except that I don't end up logged in ...

Am I really the only one experiencing this? It's hugely bugging me, and I have still not been able to identify when it does and when it doesn't happen ...

happens occasionally to me, not so much recently... and the lag has been better as well, so perhaps it's related to partial logins due to timeouts?

It happened to me one or two days ago. The symptoms of my problem are slightly different than yours, but the effect is the same (loss of "since last post data"). My gut says it's caused by the same thing, but since we're in different places, using different machines and probably different operating systems, it manifests slightly differently.

I've had this problem, too, now that it's mentioned :?

this has indeed happened to me before. i utilize the stay logged in feature, but every so often it logs me out, and when i log back in it just evaluates all the posts as read.

Not really as you describe it. My browser forgets the cookie every so often and I have to log in again. Dunno, maybe it's just the cookie expiring, but it often happens at the same time as the wiki cookie expires. Are they having a shared namespace or something?

This is actually highly annoying to me, since there is no separation of domains for the forums and wiki. I'm having separate passwords from the beginning, to improve security, but now I just generate a new one each time a pass expires. This is something like every 3-4 weeks. Very secure setup, but a bit annoying.
