Ship travelling on land?!

I undocked from the location near the centre of the map (direction: north) and my ship appears to be able to sail over land. Is this a game error, or should areas of coastal transition be considered to be water. I have not tried sailing inland because that might screw it up even more, but I'd like to know what the deal is with this.

A smaller boat undocks much nearer the location, so this can happen. It's not a bug, you can only travel out to sea from there.

Sure, it that helps you. Call it a quirk of the game.
You can also walk on water in some places. Since all roads are straight it can intersect a mass of water.

Okay, I'll just go out to sea... *resists the temptation to sail inland*
