How is it my skill for something went from novice to awkward in a mater of moments ....when awkward is a lower level?

That just doesn't happen. Most likely you just looked wrong. For example repairing weapons is different from repairing tools. And defending from animal attacks I think still uses your fighting skill. Also some fruits may say farming but actually use forestry skill.

bottom up.. check the times... he hit hismelf first... novicely... then hit the other guy awkwardly...

You always hit yourself at least novicely if you aren't any better than a novice fighter. This is to allow suicide.

Could it be some kind of rounding issue due to fatigue? When you're fresh, rounded up, tired, rounded down?
