What is a froe? Do I really need one for my tarpit?

I have just completed a tarpit. According to the wiki, I need a bucket and shovel to operate it. However, when I try to use it, I am told I need a froe. Is that correct? A froe club? A steel froe? Which? Both? Neither?
I am really annoyed about this because I do not have the technology for making a steel froe. Nor the froe club. It appears I have wasted a huge amount of time making this tarpit. At the very least, the wiki should be updated so more people do not get caught by this.
