Containers: Chest - can you lock it? ; Wooden plate - huh?

Chest:
Can I put a lock on a chest?
If not, why not?
If so, what do I need to make the lock?
Not that I have a spare 500g iron - this seems a vastly excessive amount of iron - I can't believe that 20% of the chest needs to be iron. Cheaper just to build a building and put a building lock on it!
Maybe this isn't such a simple question - what's the point of a chest - has anyone actually ever built one?!

Wooden Plate:
"A plate made from wood. You can store divisable material like food, bones or coal on it, but not items like weapons or tools. The plate is transportable and preserves the items stored in it. "
Huh? "Preserves the items stored on it." ?? How - things are preserved anyway aren't they?
What's the point of building a wooden plate - has anyone ever bothered?

In fact, more generally, do any of these items have a purpose, and are any of them worth their material costs?

OK, first of all the wooden plate does not let the items in it rot. That is one advantage to it, another is that it is one of the few transportable storages, and is very cheap compared to other storage containers. Last of all it was also added mainly for a RP item also.
The chest cannot be locked, however there is another container called a locked chest that can be locked. The chest is largely a RP item, it is something you would build on a pirate's boat to hold treasure ect. Alot of RP possibilities with this item.
I designed and implemented the wooden plate, and I edited alot of changes on the chest. So the infornmation I am giving should be accurate.

Anyway, I have also built a wooden plate with one of my characters, and although it doesn't really profit much, it is still fun to have a transportable storage. The only transportable storage that there was for a very long time was the apothecary kit, but now there is like 4 and a few more being added soon.

I'm sorry, but resources -rot- now? How long ago was that implemented because that -sucks-!

When saying resources I meant food. I do not know if resources rot or not, but raw and cooked foods(including healing foods) do.

Even indoors now? I thought a building was essentially a container.

Resources do not currently rot in inventories or buildings. However, plans to make resources rot inside of buildings have been heavily discussed (before which, decay rates will be adjusted).

I love the idea of chests
It must be made of iron, maybe 200 grams of iron?
Imagine quest like that
"Sail to the xxx harbour and give this box to YYY, do NOT even think about breaking the lock!"

Several real life years ago long before item decay - All organic resources rot if left on the ground outside

Ok, still confused.
What does this wooden plate do for me that I can't do already?
I've never noticed anything rot - how long before something rots, how much does it rot, and what rots?
Does the plate allow me to carry more than my normal inventory level?
Or does it just prevent rotting?
Locked chest I can't see on the wiki:

Where is it?

It doesn't allow you to carry anymore. It currently does prevent rot (but rot also doesn't currently occur in personal inventories) - Aside from RP value the wooden plate allows you to hold food which you don't want to be consumed - It also allows transfer of groups of resouces in one go
psymann wrote:I've never noticed anything rot - how long before something rots, how much does it rot, and what rots?
All (at at least most) organic based resources rots - they rot at different rates - some rates are mentioned in the wiki - non-organic resources don't rot
It doesn't exist in game

Aha, ok, making more sense now, thanks for explaining further.
So a plate is something you'd put in a building to store spare food (so more like a tupperware plastic tub than a plate, as it is just a storage container that keeps food fresh). Not something you'd carry, and not something you'd eat off. Got it I think
As for locked chests, I think it would be good to have these, so if you don't have the 200 iron needed to lock a building (or if you don't own your own building) then you can have a chest which might just hold 10k or 20k resources, but the lock might either take 20 iron instead of 200 iron, or might use wood instead. But that should be a wooden chest, not a 20% iron one, or it does become useless as it's cheaper to build a building with a lock than a chest with a lock. The fact these storage options often seem to be bigger than buildings is rather strange - a wooden shelf is almost the same size as a shack, and needs steel tools to build... wierd.
Anyway, until I have more than I can carry, and a safe building, I shall not bother with a wooden plate, and until I live in a world where iron grows on trees, or until I really really want one to RP with, I will just live without a chest. Shame, as I'd quite like to build a little wooden lockable chest to put my jewelry in, or my iron deposits or something...

If you have a slow connection like I do at home, you do not wish to see trivial (1 to xxx grams) piles of things you do not need. Putting them in a container hides them from view and the list is effectively shorter.
Also if you are traveling, you might want to save the cooked meat for last since it weights less. But if you happen to be carrying stuff like spinage, you will eat the cooked meat first because spinage is a dual action food (meaning it can be used for healing as well as daily food). So if you want to save the cooked meat for the way home when you need the most capacity for carrying resources, you can put it on a plate and eat the spinage instead.
Cantr items have never been logical. New items may try to follow a logic (in fact, RD people have been working hard to make containers worthy of their costs) but it's necessarily the same logic that older items follow since the older items may have been designed by people who resigned long ago.
And I don't think container locks have been coded yet. What makes it so different from a building lock, I don't know. Or maybe it's not that difficult, ProgD is just busy with some more important stuff.
But it would be cool if locks could be added to chests and boxes later on instead of one having to decide from the beginning wether they want to have it with a lock or no lock.

I was really happy with the wooden plate when it was first added, but since then my enthusasiam has died down a little, since I found that the way containers work kind of hurts the RP value.
If someone hands you a plate of food at a party, you have to actually dump it all on the ground and then pick it up before you can eat it. And I'm not to crazy about the generic 'so and so takes some material out of storage' message either.
But I guess there's really no way to work around that other reprogramming all containers, and that seems like a lot of work for such a little thing. (Though I am curious if they're planned to have any work done on them in the future?)

I think that thing was fixed, if you are holding the container, the things you take out go to your inventory instead of the floor.

Yes that has been fixed. You do not get the message on the events screen when you take something off the wooden plate, and now it ends up in your inventory and not on the ground.
