Dynamic names on vehicles

Postby Phalynx » Mon Oct 16, 2006 5:25 pm

More of a niggle than a bug but when you click on a vehicle to rename it (though I can think of no reason on earth why you would) it comes up with:

The current name of this place is XXXXXX. Enter the new name:

But its not a place its a vehicle...

Now that this was brought up, is it said somewhere what to enter if you want to restore the old name? For example if you get a bike that has some irrelevant name so you rename it, but later it gets stolen and you need to tell others the original name, since that's what they would see. It might be hard to remember. Forgive me if it's said on the renaming page, I haven't used dynamic naming in ages (I mean for vehicles).

Ahh.... but this is like building dynamic naming, right? No amnesia? And the original name is still there unless your character changes it?

I think Seko's question is, can it be changed back to the original, if you don't remember what that is.

No you can't.... and of course what would be the point.

I presume, like place names, if you change the name, you are changing the name only for yourself - others will have no reason to rename a vehicle and will see the original name - this is not the famed signage that apparently will occur before total amnesia.

I just said what the point was.

Imaginary example, you would receive a bike named "Kingdom of Dweedlebop Mountains north-north-west Jumbo Carrier 03". You would know that the Kingdom of Dweedlebop mountains has long since become extinct, and the bike would only be used by yourself and maybe one or two friends, which you would announce that the bike is now called Our Bike 1. Everything goes fine for years when suddenly someone forgets to lock it, leading into a newspawn hopping on and driving off. You try chasing but just happen to be carrying 15 kilos and the thief is soon vanished from sight. Let's assume also that the following location is totally deserted and has seven roads leading out. No idea where your bike went. Then you decide to send people searching, or drop notes or radio around or what ever. Only that you don't remember what the bike was called, only that there was a location name and a serial number. - Guess how many bikes have been named in a similar fashion?

1) You would be stupid and vain to rename it,
2) you would make a note of its original name unless you were really stupid,
3) Don't imagine that becuase you rename it in a particular way your fellow RPers wouldn't incorporate both names,
4) it would be unlikely that a man in his twenties would arrive in town at preceisely the moment another man in his twenties would arrive with an almost identical bike,

5) When vehicle amnesia comes in everyone is f*cked unless they have used signs (if they ever happen)

This as academic, I know you and you wouldn't let this situation arise...

(incidentally I strongly argue against amnesia as I beleive the historic provenance of vehicles, buildings and towns should be recorded)

It is my understanding that the signage is going to be automatic for all vehicles and buildings. It is the only way that I can see amnesia for either being possible. The difference between now and then will be, that if you change the signage, everyone will see the new name and not the old.

That is exactly how signage is planned - Individual dynamic names can still be used but all vehicles and buildings will have a visible (and changable) public sign (or signs) .
