Trouble with boat speed

Postby Cherize » Tue Oct 03, 2006 1:38 am

I have a soarer in the open sea, with three longboats and a dinghy attached to it. The soarer will not move. All are fully or almost fully loaded. Any suggestions? I am an experienced sailor and have never encountered this before.

The soarer is probably overweight. You might have to ditch one of the longboats.

A thigh high leather boot, with stiletto heels and metal buckles down the sides, guaranteed to turn heads

Very nice.

Doug, I'm in the process of trying that.

Can you send me details (full name of Soarer and your character) and I'll look into this further. I doubt it is a weight issue as the movement code allows overweight boats to move (though very slowly) until they next dock .

I have undocked 1 longboat and it is now moving slowly.

Using the calculation:
ship speed = base speed - load/weight effect
ship speed = 40 - 490000/30000
ship speed = 40 - 16.33
ship speed = 23.67

The soarer is going way slower than half speed. What effect does an attached boat have? Does it just increase the load? Thus having a negative effect on speed?

I'm guessing that this is the case, as a fully loaded longboat would have a negative effect of approx. 9. Having two fully loaded longboats attached would reduce the speed to between 5 and 6. Less than the speed of a raft. :(

The weight of the attached boats and everything on them are added to the the weight on the soarer. Thus they do indeed decrease the spead of the soarer (the more stuff on them, the more they add weight).

Thanks for verifying my suspicions. Looks like I'll be changing my character's name to Santa Claus. :D

Santa Claus can travel everywhere in the world on one night ... this sounds more like The Plodding Dutchman

Santa Claus will work. I can see the port and still have 7 realtime weeks to get there. I might make it.
