Cannot load long pages - time out

Postby SekoETC » Wed Sep 20, 2006 8:52 am

I won't say which town this is although some might figure it out. The problem is I have had the window open for an hour or so and it has refused to load past the point it is now. This is all the text there is to be seen (in addition to the character info and buttons). This is not the first time I have tried in vain to see what's in the bottom, if I can keep my patience up to this point, it never advances any further. This is only a problem of my home computer / internet connection. In school I can load the lists fast and no problem. But in here it takes a long while to load this far and if there's something past that point, I cannot see it.

I find it hard to believe that loading a list could prove so tedious. The buttons are the same for each item of a certain type, if it's a machine, it will have the use button, if it's a resource, it will have pick up and store into container buttons. And so forth. Tools have repair states. I cannot see how many queries this page executes since I cannot see the footer, but surely there shouldn't be that many?? Logically it would be like search for resources where location is current, displaying the size of the pile and calling the buttons with an id attached. I cannot even see the source code since for some reason it's blank until the page finishes loading. Which it will never do.

Is there any chance you could make pages like this more accessible? A search engine? Sub pages? Filters? Is there a chance the code might be doing unneeded repeats that slow it down?

The page contents is send to you when it is complete (excluding headers and footers). So when you see ie. part of item list, then this list has been generated completely before you started receiving it.

Then why is the loading skippy, text appearing in blocks? What you say suggests that it should all appear at once.

In the first phase PHP and MySQL generates the page. In the second phase HTTP server sends it to you. Booth phases overlap, but only a little, therefore whole item list processing is done before sending. So the problem could be current HTTP server load or problems over connection.
