Coins?

I have a section in my inventory called coins but I have not seen any...
I haven't played for that long, so is it something that exists but is rare, or something that is yet to be implemented?
I ask because one of my characters now thinks knows about the existance of coins and is very greedy!

It seems to me it is good idea. I agree with you.

But coins are rare. There has been much discussion in the forums as to whether the concept of currency will ever succeed in Cantr.

coins in Cantr only have as much value as other characters give them. Having loads of coins will mean nothing unless other characters are willing to trade for them - they'll just be a waste of iron...

The reason people in RL put so much trust and effort into "coins", is because they are insured by the government. As shaky as some governments are in real life, they are infinitely more in Cantr. So, people don't put much trust in them.
I have played Cantr for almost two years now, and I have still never been in a town that used coins. I would love to. This is a very interesting aspect of society -- currency.

You can beat the metal back out of coins now. So they have a bit more value if you are concerned with the physical value of the money.

But that's what makes them even more pointless. Why build a coin press and spend time converting iron to coin, only to have to spend more time getting it back again.
Modern day RL coins don't have this intrinsic value, and are thus the only ones with any point in Cantr, but as others say, without stable government and trust, it's all a non-starter.

However, modern day real coins didn't come about in a single leap, but evolved over centuries.
Coins were a development of bartering. In Roman times the coins were minted by the government and the act of minting guaranteed the metal content of the coins. That's the kind of coin system Cantr has, although because we know you can't use different amounts or materials to mint coins there isn't the problem of assuring people the coins contain the right metal.

We use coins in cantr, mostly to keep count of wages and such. Trading with coins does happen a bit, but not very much. There is not enough trust i guess, and players die or leave to quickly. But who knows what happens in the nearby future

)
melting them down is useless. The coins are only usefull if they represent a value more then their material cost.
We use steel, iron, copper and silver coins.

Tanner uses coins quite effectively.

I'm trying to start a currency system on a new born, but pushing, spanish city. I know that what I'm going to say would be better posted on suggestions, but... Making coins shouldn't take so much time. You might have to be able to build 100 coins a day, for instance.
That would make coins and currency system more common and useful.

Yes, correct. The cost of making the coins should be low relative to their metal value. It also implies that coins should be dealt with in stacks, if needed. But that probably needs quite a bit of programming, so I don't know...
