I don’t think they should be punished. Some of them exploited this bug, accidentally.

If system let them to do this, it’s not fault of them, but fault of system.

I would only punish them in such, the first character of player can’t be punished, because you never will find out if this was exploiting of bug or accidental event. So only the second and continuing characters of the same player can be punished.

I'm against punishing players for this. It really is not that obvious what is a bug and what is a feature - stranger changes have been made. Now, had an in-game announcement been made, it would have been all just and fun to come down like a load of bricks on any machine-gunning hunters. But as it is, it's not easy to figure out who was exploiting and who was merely confused. Fortunately, this didn't last more than a couple of days (as far as I know).

Once I realized there was a bug I was really expectign some kind of announcement or maybe even hunting being locked altogether until it was fixed, so I was actually suprised to see it lasted so long, unless it just wasn't considered that serious.

Between this and the change earlier that deleted all my precious tortoises (and now my town is screwed...), I wonder how many animals are left?

Good point. Is there any possibility of reverting animal populations?

Cantr keeps database backups. I know nothing of the details, but is it possible to extract only the animal data from a backup and reset the animal populations to that (hopefully avoiding whatever problem it was that erased a bunch of herds last time)? I don't think there's a big problem with continuity, since that's pretty much all shot to hell with the recent events; therefore any pre-changes backup more recent than a month or so should be good enough.

Again, I am not a ProgD member, so this may be more trouble than it's worth.

Maybe keep cats instead, they move quicker and they dont hibernate!

Yeah but you also can't stab them to death and use their corpses as protection, believe me, I've tried.

In the areas where the hunting error mattered, the animals will filter back in over time naturally. It'll fix itself.

I can only hope this is a step in the process of individualising or tameing animals.
Reality was never my strong point.

Yes, it is (yay!). In a different topic (http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7629):

Jos Elkink wrote:I made quite significant changes to animals (in the background) so if you experience any problems, please email bugs@cantr.net ... I now 'individualised' animals, so even though it still looks like packs of animals, they're not stored as such anymore. This will allow many new features in future.
