I made sure multiple times: mine was the only domesticated ostrich in town. There were no other domesticated ostriches either in a pack, saddled, or unsaddled in town.

I'm not sure how many ticks it's supposed to take for an animal to go down a hunger status, but it went from fattened to well fed during this.
I'm unclear as to whether there's a mechanic I'm not aware of at work here, or if this is just a bug.

Is your ostrich saddled?
Not sure if that matters, but I wouldn't be surprised if that could change stuff? Maybe you need food to be available "on" the ostrich instead of just in town?

Yes, this ostrich was saddled at the time.

Just wondering...because I've never used one before, but is there an animal enclosure? Particularly one which is locked and your character doesn't have a key to?
I know what the purpose of an enclosure is, but I have never really understood how they work for someone that has the key - do they maybe hide the packs from those without access? In which case...if there is one in your town, that could be why the only ostrich you see is yours?
And regarding Bmot's post, no, feed doesn't have to be available 'on' a saddled steed if they have access to some in a trough or other relevant container.

Not in that town anymore so I can't check, but I do not recall seeing one. And for reference, the ostrich could not find anything to eat because I was carrying its plate of food at the time (totally forgot I had it). It's the double-starvation that is the bug.

This is a bug in itself because ostriches are greedy bastards with very flexible necks and it would just twist around to stare at you with its crazed and evil eyes for a split second before jack-hammering that plate of food right out of your hands with its terrifying beak.
(don't mind me I was traumatized by ostriches as a child

Haha Marian!
Were you dropped on your head as a spawnling? You obviously picked a deformed ostrich which is part doduo and so has 2 heads. It might seem like nothing now, but one day it will evolve and you'll have to feed it 3 times as much as a normal ostrich. My condolences.
I don't think a locked animal enclosure would hide the packs of animals but if you tried to remove or add to pack you'd get an error message. I don't know if I think that because I've experienced it or not, so don't take my word for it. Enclosures are kind of an extra luxury that might never come in useful. If you're carrying around a plate I doubt there'd be an enclosure.
