Disease

Postby Things » Mon Jul 12, 2010 2:27 am

Sorry if this isn't the right place.

I've noticed that the era the game takes place in isn't very advanced, but nor is it in the dark ages. Anyway, what I'm wondering is, what would characters know about mental illnesses, or other diseases? How should they react?

Say if there's a character with schizophrenia. Would other characters know what it is or would they assume he's infested with demons (or any other supernatural cause)? Would he be able to get any kind of treatment for this? Do characters know anything about viruses?

I think this is more of a general discussion than a general support topic, since there is no official policy on how much characters should know about the cause of diseases. It might vary based on location how things are interpreted. I had a character with a brain tumor believed to have dark spirits inside her skull that had to be released by tapping a hole in the skull with a chisel. I don't like it when Cantrians use scientific terms for conditions because they probably shouldn't know them. Rather than saying someone is schizophrenic, you could say they hear voices or have spirits in their head, and rather than saying someone is autistic, say that they're peculiar.

I'd say its up to you.

If your charcter like is the type that could become religious or something then shoot for the evil spirt angle.

If they're more logical based then have them interpret it as some sort of medical problem.

I agree with what Seko said. I wouldn't use the actual term for things, but I' find a cool name to replace it, like fifofet.
