knocking

Postby trage » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:02 pm

Hmmm I was just in a building and I heard someone knocking on the door to outside, but theoretically no one else is in the building.

Duh, re-read what you just wrote.

You hear someone knocking on the door (to the outside).

It might not be clear for a non-native speaker, but there's no bug.

No I am saying someone was knocking from the inside on the door to the outside. When I am in there with no one else and I don't knock that shouldn't happen.

Why can you be sure that the knock was not from outside?

I thought it said something else when you hear a knock coming form outside. I thought it was when it said 'You hear someone knocking on the door to ________.' that it was going and I thought it said "you hear someone knocking on the door from ________."

I don't think that's the case.

We thought, when someone was alone in a room, and they heard a knock, they would be able to tell that the knock came from the other side of the door, really. ;) We call it common sense, not 'more sense'. :P

If the knock had come from your side of the door, you would have gotten something like: 'You see a man in his twenties knock on the door to...'.

'a man in his twenties says: "I need to talk to Trage."'
'You see a man in his twenties knocking on the door to Trages House.'
'You see Trage enter Location coming from Trages House.'
'Trage says: "GHOST! GHOSTT!!!"'

*sigh* As said in Scott Adam's book the Dilbert Principle, "Everyone has moments of idiocy."

Trage, no one is saying you're an idiot. It's just funny, that's all :)

The main thing, is, you asked about it, and you were merely told you were incorrect. Don't take offence to it, everyone makes mistakes.
