Ummm it doesn't turn gray

One of my characters no matter how many times I click on him and leave he won't turn gray. I keep thinking something is happening, but no nothing happens at all and it's getting quite annoying.

This happens to new characters when no events have happened yet. It has been known to persist sometimes for days even when something happens for that character.
