Don't use the java applet

The problems with using the java applet are numerous, you might have java, but it might not be set-up with your browser properly, or have the correct settings. It might be configure not to allow certain connections (IRC), might be too old a version etc etc etc.

We can't really begin to suggest solutions to problems with the Java applet, as they are so numerous, so I'd suggest downloading an IRC client, such as Mirc, or as Nick linked to earlier, X-Chat2

Your less liekly to have problems with a 'proper' client, and any problems are easier to solve.

:P :D I actually made it there.

Spent all that time fiddling with folders nearly tipping my coffee over in
the excitement of working it out.

And low and behold found the room empty. :(

Make sure you were on the irc.gnug.org server. If the rom was empty, you've got something set up wrong. It's never empty (inactive maybe, but not empty)

I eventually got in to IRC chat by being router through someone else's computer...

My ISP for some reason will not let me download from gnug.org, I cant access their webpage (except through a proxy) and although I could upload to the irc server, thus appearing to connect, I could not download, therefore seeing nothing and nobody and being told I had not joined a channel,

Bizarre but we worked round it thanks to Sho (Thanks dude!)

You can now also use our very own IRC channel, either by using your own client and connecting to DALnet, channel #Cantr (see DAL.net) or by using our IRC applet in your browser here: IRC Applet.

Is this correct... or a residual from days gone past?

The reference to Dal.net is out of date - it's now hosted on gnug.org
The rest still applies
