Scandinavian languageses

Postby SCUBA » Sun Jan 22, 2006 8:51 am

I have told my norwegian and danish friends to join cantr, so the swedish cantr-islands would be more populated. I have also posted threds in norwegian and danish roleplaying forums. If norwegians or danes spawn a swedish character, should they try to change their language to swedish or could they just speak norwegian and danish which would be understandable for all? And if they will get their own island could swedes speak swedish there?

Possibly some slavic languageses close to polish already do this in polish islands? Or are they not close enough?

English islands are they limited to british or american english? I think not, and you can tell if it is a person from UK, US or bad spelling swede like me who is playing different characters.

You should only play in language areas that you know the language of. So you should play in Swedish when in the Swedish area, and in English in the English area. It doesn't matter where you are from, only that you know the language.

Check out the rules about opening language regions - perhaps you can manage to get a Norwegian and Danish area off the ground :) ...

Norwegian has two languageses

Postby SCUBA » Sun Jan 22, 2006 10:57 am

If a norwegian language area will open do they have to chose one of the two languageses they have? Normally in dayly life these two languageses are used together. And they differ more from each other then swedish do from any of them. Because all these languageses are so simular I would prefer to change name on the swedish area to the scandinavian area. We are at this moment so few to be seperated.

On a tangent, how do Germans/Austrians/Swiss handle this? Those languages are rather different, or so I've heard...

/Hellzon - not sure about the scandinavian mix idea, I'm afraid.

They all "speak" german.

German is the same in all these contries. Austria and Swizerland do have there own written languageses, but they are not used much at all. So there is no such problem for them. The spoken languageses do thou differ as much as the scandinavian languageses do or even more. Especially swytcherdutch or how to spell that. Probably not better than many english words of mine. :?

Do let those Norwegian and Danish friends join and speak what language they want in any region. If they can make themselves understood in the Swedish region, I suggest they should select to spawn there.

In the Dutch area a character spoke South African; a language close to Dutch, but with many differences. He could get along quite well with the 'natives'.

The Dutch and the Germans can understand each other reasonable well too and communication between the two languages works without too much problems.

I wouldn't mind if the Swedish area became Scandinavian. It would just make it more interesting (not just because of more characters) and unique possibly.

I think you're giving them the wrong impression.

If your character is born Swedish, he only knows Swedish. If your character is born French, he only knows French. Et cetera. I know English and French, but if my English character goes to the French island he will not understand them.

So if those languages are so similar, then get them to use Swedish (or if later, you find enough people to make a separate language group for each, go ahead). But a Swedish born character should not speak anything else, even if for convenience.
