Private Pointing

Postby UloDeTero » Sun Mar 19, 2006 6:47 am

I think a character should be able to privately point to someone or something without anyone else noticing. This would be useful, not only for discreet introductions, but also for talking about someone and pointing them out without their knowledge. As an example:

You say to YourFriend: "See that guy? I really hate him!"
You point discreetly at ThatGuy, visible only to YourFriend.

I see your point. If you are whispering and point to someone, they will usually want to know why. And it needn't because you hate them, but you're simply showing the best contact for a resource.

I am majorly in favor of this one.... It makes a lot of sense because otherwise you have to rely on long winded descriptions which in a busy town can lead to mistakes an misidentification...

Shouldn't be any problem at all on the back-end. In terms of interface, two, more or less equivalent ways to do this:

Choose someone to point to on the People screen, and choose the person you want to send the "point" to on a menu.

Choose the person you want to send the point to on the People screen, and choose the target on a menu.

I have no idea which would be better.

The latter is consistent to how whispering works, though.

Just a brainstorm to add to this...
If there are others who are against the entire suggestion of secret pointings, make the rest of the people in the area see:

You see <person's name> descreetely point to someone.

Just like whispering, where you can see someone talking to another, but do not hear what they said.

Of course, this would make towns full of paranoid people really pay special attention to the furtive pointers!

:? You wouldn't be able to see someone 'discreetly pointing', but if you did, you'd be able to see who they're pointing to. You can't see pointing without seeing the direction of the point.

Other people shouldn't be able to see it, in my opinion.

Ideally, there should perhaps be some kind of 'private actions' submenu, where the character can point, talk - maybe even give items - completely privately. Y'know, a lot of what you see in the events screen doesn't need to be seen by everyone. Some of the events are only between two people and only of any relevance to those two people.

I don't understand why this should be possible. If you observe people, you can see them pointing. This would assume you can do things when people are 'not looking', which seems not such a good idea. In Cantr people already have much less senses, lets not drop more information for characters. It would be nice if someone could be 'paying no attention' but that you can avoid anyone spotting you very simply is not such a good idea, I think.

Well, vague rambling, but basically - I don't like the idea ;) ...

I guess the question I have is who benifits from private pointing?

Radiers taking out gurads.
Assasigns taking out Leaders
People with grudges

Possibly, discretly tell who to talk to about resources.
But why would this have to be private?

I just dont see the benift to society cohesive people. That is this I only see this as benifical to those wishing to bring down a curent soceity or structure.

- And yes it contradics my signature a little, but I think removing an
empires leaders by murder is such a uncuth way of acheiving this.

There are always other ways to identify people to your friends anyway.

I think it should be possible. Since now you can go saying "The person I pointed to is King Richard, our beloved leader." And right after whisper to someone "He's a total asshole." But it takes deception. Pointing discreetly should be possible, there's a difference between subtle hand gestures and pointing with straight arm.

For what it counts(absolutly nothing) i like this idea. If you want some pryvacy, you should be able to have a little bit of it. Maby there should be some sort of thing that if you look at that person you should be able to see him doing the pointing, or somthing. Perhaps a skill, or a project, called "observing <this person>" and depending on the skill, your project will go faster or slower, as in, you will be able to interpret what they say faster or slower, and of course, depending on your skill, be able to hide that you ARE doing this project. This project should be like pickin a lock, that it is visible, unless you have a good enough skill levle that you can hide that you are doing anything.

Is there any rule against saying something like;

Person A wispers to Person B: "that guys a .... *Person A points to guy fourth from the bottom of the people list*" Or building list for that mater?
