File uploads

Postby marol » Wed Jul 27, 2005 9:09 am

File upload delay is unacceptable to me. You have to prepare mail, send it, then somebody has to receive it, upload file and send URI back. It takes too long.

My chars often come to a place, create image depending on this place circumstances and leave it on the ground. Now I have to wait day or two before I get back picture link, so I can leave it and continue traveling.

The solution is to allow players to upload files themselves. So many forums offers file uploading, so why Cantr doesn't? Of course some moderators shall check those images and if they don't met rules remove them.

Greetings.

Incorrect!

1) Prepare mail
2) Send it
3) If the file is too large, it sits in an inbox waiting to be approved and discounted as spam
4) I receive it
5) If 3 was true, then I need to edit your file in wonderous ways in order to make the image size smaller
6) Then it's uploaded
7) Then I send you the URL.

I'm so very unaffected by your complaint. There are many things 'wrong' with the game that you all enjoy to pick at. Such as "Why isn't this bug fixed" or "Why hasn't this been implemented". Realise, staff is run on a volunteer basis, using our free time.

I'm very sorry I go to work to earn money in order to live, and I can't get to your picture request in a timely manner. But you should suck it up and be happy that it's at least being uploaded.

As to why you e-mail it in is for an obvious fact of people wanting to breach the Capital Rule. Not only that, but Cantr has bandwidth limits as it is already. To allow you to upload your own images is asking for everyone to upload every small thing to the database to sap up Cantrs bandwidth space. Not just that, but once it's uploaded, it CAN'T be removed. Why not? All those notes now will have broken links, and so you'll see a map with... no map! A useless note. This is exactly why all images are stored on Cantr's server and not your own, in the event the image dissapears, we want ZERO broken links. I very much doubt being able to upload your own images will happen anytime soon.

Now, back to the matter at hand. On average, there should only be a 24 hour delay in getting your image uploaded. I've discussed this several times, on several threads throughout the forum in regards to uploading images. If you can't accept that timeframe, then don't use pictures. Simple. In order to get a rebate you need to wait 8 to 10 weeks, don't you? So, in order to get your image uploaded, you need to wait the time that it takes to get it uploaded. It's a basic principle of workmanship - Things take TIME.

Whew! That vent went well. One last thing, your image upload will be guaranteed to be delayed if there IS a Capital Rule breach, or it may not even be uploaded at all. So, be sure there's nothing in the image that isn't in Cantr already. Such as a chainsaw or a firetruck.
