I finally noticed the key building resource we have been missing: glue!
Most furniture (particularly when metal was expensive...like in cantr) wasn't made with nails. All the joints were glued together. This might take longer, and require more skill, but besides not needing metal it is actually stronger.
From some research I just did it seems that the preferred low-tech glue today is made by heating hide in water. Here is one of my sources: http://www.hollowtop.com/hopsstore_html/sinews_and_glue.htm
