Furniture from parts

Postby wadko » Sun Jul 11, 2010 5:41 pm

Make furniture from parts just like engines.

I see it like this:

how it is

- furniture made form resources in the place where the furniture is meant to be placed
- time to construct a furniture is often long
- tools needed for making furniture are from wide range

---
how it should be

- furniture made from parts
- time to put the parts together = 1-2 hours (2 hours are for big things)
- time to build parts is the same as in the "furniture now" ex. time to build table parts = 5 days
- the same goes for the amount of resouces used ex. table parts need 5000 grams of wood
- and the same goes for the tool used for making parts ex. tools needed for making table parts = hammer and planer
- parts can be made everywhere
- BUT tools needed to make furniture from parts are ONLY a hammer and a screwdriver
- for things like fur rug there are no changes, still made from fur not from parts (however you can roleplay that making fur rug from parts is like puting the rug on the floor)

The advantages of this idea are:
- Furniture becomes more popular because you don't need to waste time in making it, you can buy it from someone who is better at capenting than you.
- New kind of business to roleplay.
- When furniture becomes so easy to obtain people can better roleplay their everyday activities (resting, eating dinner, sleeping, etc.)

There are actually parts like this in the database, the system was just never finalized. If furniture was made from parts, you could use a lathe to make table and chair legs. It would also be cool if wool could be used instead of cotton for stuffing.

But the current system has the problem that if you want the outcome to look different with different parts, there needs to be a new item for each type. It would be cool if there was a system that preserved knowledge of what sort of parts have been used and if you looked at a chair, you could see if it has simple or elaborately carved parts and hard or padded seat.

IKEA!

I'm all for this.
I think furniture should be made more available. It ads some neat RP possibilities.

Maybe we could change it to be like vehicles - with two ways of construction?

If I'm following then the suggestion is to make furnature easier to manufacture.
But this isn't the case:

wadko wrote:- time to put the parts together = 1-2 hours (2 hours are for big things)

You've just added time onto the manuacture period

wadko wrote:- the same goes for the amount of resouces used ex. table parts need 5000 grams of wood
- and the same goes for the tool used for making parts ex. tools needed for making table parts = hammer and planer

ok, so nothing made easier here

wadko wrote:- parts can be made everywhere

As long as you have the resources with you (kinda of like now... actually, exactly the same as now)

wadko wrote:- BUT tools needed to make furniture from parts are ONLY a hammer and a screwdriver

We've added a screwdriver to things that didn't before need it. So thats more time and tools so far...

wadko wrote:- Furniture becomes more popular because you don't need to waste time in making it, you can buy it from someone who is better at capenting than you.

Or just pay someone to make it for you, like you can now

wadko wrote:- New kind of business to roleplay.

Nope, see above quote. You can do this now

wadko wrote:- When furniture becomes so easy to obtain people can better roleplay their everyday activities (resting, eating dinner, sleeping, etc.)

I see people do this all the time at the moment

So how is it easier exactly????

The furniture system will inevitably have to be overhauled. Costs will likely be severely reduced, so furniture will become more available anyway. If we also manage to make furniture moveable, complicating the manufacturing process by introducing additional steps should be unnecessary.

Why?

If furniture was made from parts, you could use a lathe to make table and chair legs.

You don't need a lathe now, so why add this to the process of making furniture?

It would also be cool if wool could be used instead of cotton for stuffing.

This would by good.

Too complicated. It should go to the end of the list of priorities.

CrashBlizz, you are such a grumbler. (I don't know if this is the correct word, in polish it should be "maruda")

Did you complain when they did the same with engines?

Or just pay someone to make it for you, like you can now

Nope, no one wants to do this now, becouse no one wants to waste time in boredom.

Yea, do it. But after you implement this "part suggestion".

Thank you :D I prefer realist but grumbler works just as well

Actually I tink I did. Still don't like where they've gone with the whole engine direction - what a waste

Ah, but they 'can' do it (and just to prove I'm not being difficult - I can provide a list of at least three times someone has built furniture for pay  )

I didn't say this one but I'll take a crack at it anyway:

complicating the manufacturing process by introducing additional steps should be unnecessary - so parts not wanted

I can provide only one name of someone who did furniture for pay and he spend a lot of time in buildings, alone.

Where do you see additional steps? You take parts for a table and put it together. :D

Well, I need someone who will build some furniture in a house... :D

Your idea:
Make table leg x 4
Make table top x 1
Assemble table x1

So thats 6 steps there..

Now lets look at it currently:
Make table x 1

....... Well I don't know about you but I swear that looks like 1 step.

The legs could probably be a set, but more components does make things more complicated. It would only be a bonus if it allowed making more elaborate furniture, and the old furniture remained as a crude version.

Oh hey, I just got the coolest idea. If furniture parts could be made of timber, that can be gathered much faster with an axe than regular wood so the furniture would be cheaper but more high-tech. Wouldn't that be awesome?

Yeah but timbers not as common to find in some places is it?

That's even better since it means something to import! It would be lame if everybody had access to it. But anyway, there are rarer things like that, and if people don't want to pay for transportation, they can just use their slowly gathered wood.

To clarify, I'm not looking to replace the existing tables but to provide a more high-tech alternative that would be faster with the right tools.

When moveable furniture is implemented, complicating the manufacturing process by splitting it into several parts would be completely unnecessary and even counterproductive. Most semi-finished products already make no sense and I'd rather reduce their number than increase it further.

The only instance where semi-finished products make sense is when a part can be made in several ways or from several materials, but with only wood and timber as possible raw materials I don't see much potential for that.

I agree, moveable furniture will be better than parts.

There is still steel and aluminium. Glass tables even? Wool and cotton. If you have no inspiration go to the nearest IKEA ;)
