Separate events for handling notes

Postby SekoETC » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:51 pm

Since notes can be deleted now, it means the ids can link to stuff that doesn't exist anymore, causing the (Item is missing) message that seems to confuse a lot of people. Thus I was thinking of adding separate event messages for operations on notes so that you can no longer tell from the event message if it was deleted afterwards, and more importantly that the text will represent the title that existed at the time of the operation, not something that it may have been changed into later on. Otherwise I'd just go and implemented without asking anyone since it's basically a bug fix, but I came to realize that if it no longer links to the object, it'll basically become impossible to track how notes get passed around, ie. no one could tell if it was a certain note or just something with the same title. So should the id still be recorded behind the scenes even if it wasn't affecting what's displayed to the user?

In all my time with the PD, I've never tracked how a note got passed around, nor even knew I could do such a thing. Perhaps I don't understand the problem...

I guess it's not an issue then. I remember one time one of my characters gave a copy of a map to my other character and PD asked what the contents of that note were, so based on that it seems you can only tell it's a note but not which note in particular. And I suppose if someone wanted to pass illegal information on a note, they would erase it afterwards.

Edit: I just came to think if Marol has been working on updating the objects handling lately, I probably shouldn't mess with it.

Ask him if it's alright.

Yeah, that's what I was planning to.
