Show note

Postby Lumino » Fri Apr 24, 2009 10:49 pm

Recently, as part of my administrative duties in a town, I started handing out official paperwork, proving citizenship in the town. (It would have been nice to be able to put my signature on the bottom, but I see that has already been suggested...for the meantime it can be RPed no problem.)

The issue is that if any of our citizens are traveling abroad, I want them to be able to show their paperwork to others to prove where they're from. However, if they give their note to someone else, there is no guarantee of getting it back. I wish there was an option to "show" a note to someone, so they would see the text but the person showing it would still keep it, much like flashing a boarding pass or something like that.

This could also be used for writing Warrants and Orders that would be shown to other people, as well as probably a million other uses.

Thoughts?

They could still grab it out of your hand. Whenever I roleplay such a thing, I drop the note and roleplay it as holding it in my hand, it's up to them to grab the note or not.

But I want them to be able to see the text of the note, not just the title, without picking it up.

You can read notes that are on the ground without picking them up

Secrecy could factor in I guess. Also, if you could show the note, it would sort of force people to look at it // it makes it less difficult to find among the notes around the ground. If he succeeds in keeping this ID card thing going, like the masterful JoJo of oldtime Seatown Forest, then there'll be a lot of ID cards floating around.

I think it's a pretty decent idea that could have it's perks.

What I mean is, I want them to see the note's text without them being ABLE to pick it up. So I can flash an ID or a pass without handing it to someone who might not give it back or dropping it on the ground where they might take it.

What if there would be a chance to grab the note but it would count as an attack on the person holding the note?

How exactly are you going to realize this idea? I could think of three ways.

1.) You could regularly drop the note to the ground and "protect" it so that nobody else can pick it up.

2.) You could "broadcast" the content to anybody around. ("You see someone show a note. It says:XYZ") This wouldn't work with pictures though and could become annoying very easily.

3.) You could equip the note (very much like clothing) so that anybody around can access the note via your character description. (This could be used for name tags, too.)

The way I was thinking of it is along the lines of "X shows you a note [NOTE TITLE]" and possibly hotlink the note title to the content...but this would probably need a whole new note system to make it possible :s

If there could be a link to the "see" button to that note on the events page, that's enough as you don't need to own a note to see it.

The problem with this system is that a person could show a note, leave town and you would still be able to access the note. On the other hand, we can just assume that you looked when he showed the note. Cantrians have a good memory.

Another problem would be that the content of the note could be changed. This could be abused for instant communication. Showing notes could be restricted to uneditable notes though.

Yeah if a cantrian can remember exactly what happened up to 6 days ago then its not much of a stretch to think they could remember a note for that long.

That shouldn't be a problem if the whole purpose of showing notes is for official paperwork which shouldn't really need to be changed.

I'm liking this idea the more I think about it :)

Notes are not very good for identification or that sort of thing to begin with, I think...they're too easy to change and forge.

Now something like a coin, that would be really interesting....of course I tend to like coins more for their use as badges or medals then actual currency anyway.
