Voting Machine

Postby Spiritus » Fri Mar 30, 2007 3:50 pm

A voting machine setup would be nice a punch card machine with an instant output of a punchcard "A" punchcard "B" punchcard "C" ect.. the punchcards could then be put into a ballot counting machine which would have a time set by a player to accept ballots could work like a project only dont have a set time in the database allow the player to choose how long the voting polls will be open. Players can then add their punchcards to the project.

players would only see:

a man in his twenties adds a punchcard to poll machine.

When the time runs out the machine could either put some type of unique note on the player who started the project or it could display a message to everyone in the area with the results.

Whats the point...

my reasoning is there is no way to have a truly confidential voting process as of yet someone can always look at a note change a note ect...
all left up to trust or openly saying what you think, some people vote differently if they know their opinion will not be heard outloud by voters or friends.

This can be used for elections or during private councels between town officials.

I know most of my ideas are retarded but i'm bored, just tell me if you want me to stop typing my random thoughts.

There are already in-game ways of voting confidentially and even in real life all secret ballot voting is left up to trust.

I think this is tooooo much sofisticated for the needs of Cantr, but if this is going to be implemented, I would like to have a similar machine with the same name, but hacked (for example with a hidden project only accessible to who made the machine or who has the kay (so it woul need a "machine lock")), so elections can be distorted.

Or simpler than all this, to allow people putting notes in an envelope without taking it (the envelope) from the ground, so everyone can see how much notes are being introduced by each voter.

...

No, I don't like it (the envelop thingy).

Maybe a simple ballot box? A container with a lock that when locked, only notes can be put inside and nothing can be took out.

I like the ballot box idea I just don't like passing to a person or putting in an envelope on the ground cause people can edit other peoples notes.

it's ok if a person counting votes changes peoples votes but not if a voter has the ability to and the only way I can think of to not let people see your vote or be able to change it would be to build a room with a lock and drag them in....

I suppose thats actually doable too didn't think of it till now.

Well, your character can make the note uneditable. Doesn't keep the person from making a new note and claiming it to be yours, but you can at least take the precaution and make your note uneditable.

If that lockable mailbox would work then we could have a voting machine there. Naturally someone needs to tally up the votes but we could use a newspawn for that, then subsequently mob-execute the newspawn and count that there really is an equal number of non-editable vote notes on the corpse as were seen taken from the box.

I could easily make a note that looks just like yours and make it uneditable then replace your with mine X.x uneditable notes are useless.... They will never truly be uneditable.

But if you replace a note, you will have an uneditable copy in your hands and you cannot destroy it. You can put it in an envelope, you can hide it among a hundred other notes, you can put it's envelop inside an envelope inside an envelop and so forth, but it's still there. Ok, if it was a vote on two candidates, and a person created false votes for both parties then it couldn't be determined which of them was the original vote. So like I was saying, the only near perfect way of voting is to take an innocent newspawn with no interest in politics, make people give him the notes, tell him to calculate the score, then subsequently kill him so fast that he doesn't have time to get pissed and create false notes to mess up the vote.

Even in the real world, you have to trust that your votes are being counted properly, hence, the US's current stink with electronic voting machines.

There is no fool proof way to vote, either in game or in the real world, and there never will be. The best way I can think to vote in the game is to have people slide their votes into a locked room (or a mailbox if they ever work), and you can see who's dragging them so you can make sure there's no double votes.

Uhm, I said that in my quote there... "Doesn't keep the person from making a new note and claiming it to be yours". Like I said, you can still take the precaution.
