Digging holes and putting stuff in them (not just bodies)
If we were to pre-dig graves for people, I would see no need. It's just an extra step. Now if were to dig holes, and put anything in them, that would be fine. Though only if we could dig them back up. Maybe have a coordinate system, where you decide where to dig. If it was big enough, you could keep your belongings fairly safe. Or dead bodies safe. And they'd be separate locations, like going into a building. That way you could drag things into them.

Now that sounds like an idea, it's easy enough for someone to break into your house and take your stuff, but just how many people have found buried treasure? All kinds of possiblities for a hole in the ground if it is treated like a "room". Hate to be the first person buried alive. It should be visible to all at a location for a certain amount of time after it's filled in though.
edit solfius: thought I'd just put the / in on the closing tag to make the quote come up properly for you

Then you could use the hole idea and the momunent idea together. Of course, only when Cantr 2.0 comes out and locations are divided up so that one huge city takes up more than only one location.
With the hole idea you mentioned choosing a specific location for it, that would mean having a sense of position in cantr which isn't present now. Do you think it is possible/easy to shift/alter such a fundamental concept when the game is as it is?
I think whatever the answer: if it is done, the sooner the better

Well Jos had mentioned before that each location would only hold a certain number of people, buildings, and a limited number of farming projects, I believe. This is Cantr 2.0, by the way.
Maybe it could be programmed for each character, etc. to take up one block in that location (outside). Each block could have an above and below ground status, with below ground starting at closed.
When someone digs a hole, it becomes open. While open, nothing can occupy that space, and objects can be dragged or dropped inside. When someone finishes a burying project there, it is closed again.
Since we'll be able to make buildings with unique shapes and sizes, wall by wall, the locations will have to be charted on a grid. To dig a hole, just select which block you want.
But just think, you're searching for buried treasure with your map and find that a building is in it's place. Now would you be able to dig inside, or would you have to tear down the building? Just try convincing it's owner to let you do that.
As to how to implement location blocks, that could be done automatically. Each building would randomly take it's place thoughout a location, with even spacing between each. When a location is filled up, buildings start going to the next. How will the people be strewn about? Random placement again? Though I imagine that there would be plenty of room left over for at least 20-30 people. And if someone wants to go into a full location, someone gets randomly pushed out.

This "hole" digging thing is pretty interesting as for finding a building in your way why not dig under it? Which you could do if city walls were implemented that way your not restricted to battering them down with rams.
Having vaults underground would be so much fun, plus it would save space and as of yet no one has started an estate agent company and it would be quite fun to have a note saying "Three bedroomed hall with underground meeting chamber..."
Over-crowding would actualy matter in the smaller zones which is why inactive people would be a problem but I'm sure people can come up with a way to solve it.....
