Rationing food

Postby BarbaricAvatar » Mon Dec 25, 2006 11:58 am

It would be nice to have the option to ration food, for example, when on a long boat journey or when you're not expecting to be near food for a while.

As i understand it the rate at which the hunger goes up when one doesn't have any food is about 5% a day.
If one had the option to ration food then my suggestion for a good system is that the char eats 50% of what they normally would, but hunger goes up by 1% a day after each rationed meal.

You can drop all your food and starve yourself a few days. Then eat until you have recovered from the hunger and repeat.

i have a question concerning hunger.

Ok, one of my charries got the eating crazy ammounts of food illness, and happned to eat five years worth of cooked meat with it. So i dumpped down my meats but forgot i had blueberries. I ate all of them and checked my hunger, and it was at zero, despite the game telling me im hungry. So if I eat something, even if its not enough, will I lose hunger?

I also have a question about hunger. If you go several days without eating and get your hunger lvl up, then do you have to eat extra food to get it back down, or does it just go down by itself when you have food each day?

it goes up by 5% each day and then down by 4%, while eating normal ammount of food.

And following Chris' suggestion, do consider the wooden plate, tin can, apothecary kit, canvas duffel, and burlap sack. :)

What would you think of rationing food, but the other way round? Instead of eating half the amount, you would have the choice to eat the double or triple amount to recieve a subtle bonus. (Increased working speed, regeneration, whatever.)

The reason why I'm suggesting this is that currently there are not enough consumable goods for a stable economy. This suggestion would increase the total amount of consumed food, but would make no difference for characters that don't have food to spare. (Although they would have a competitive disadvantage compared to well fed characters in the long run.)

A nice optional rule would be if eating double rations wouldn't just require the double amount of one type of food, but the normal amount of each of two different foods. Instead of eating 400g of potatoes per day, you would have to eat 200g potatoes AND 25g cooked meat, for example. This way food diversity would gain a greater importance.

Sorry for necromancing this thread, but it seemed to fit in a way and I'm reluctant to create a new thread for my wild ideas.
Pretty in pink.
