Um...in case people didn't reallize, the health reasons I meant were the wide variety of often-fatal diseases that were transmitted by the universally impure drinking water.

You can get drunk, with all it's effects, from beer...but you could get all manner of things from Diarrhea on up from drinking water.

With the implementation of vehicle fuel, we are more than likely going to be introducing ethanol into the game. This raises the question of can/should Cantrians have access to alcohol and what should be the side effects.

I would personally like to see alcoholic beverages be introduced as a form of medicine. An increase in drunkeness as healing alcohols are consumed would be an interesting way to give them some balance.

The simplest side effects could be along the lines of tiredness back in the days when it affected the game with decreased work efficiency and hampered combat abilities. Another cool side effect would be slurred speech, and the occassional automated loud whisper.

I still think it would add an interesting roleplaying as well as purely game mechanical dynamic.

Maybe tiredness and when the drunkenness bar is over 50%, you have a 50% chance of seeing: you see a man in his twenties stumble over his own feet. Kinda like sneezing. It just happens. It's not rp'd.

Let's have a brainstorm for drunkenness effects, shall we?

Bumping against the door when trying to get out would be nice, people on the other side would hear someone bumping against the door. Though it would be cool if that was possible intentionally as well. And in opposition to knocking maybe there could be a chance of losing 1 health on impact?

Another great thing, saying things aloud when you were supposed to whisper! You know how your voice can get louder when you're drunk and you just don't realize it. Imagine all this drunken babble and public immorality.

Also when someone is seriously intoxicated, that could lead to vomiting and wild bowel movements described in my sickness topic.

But with all these bad effects, it should probably have something good as well, reducing tiredness and fixing a bit of damage, perhaps? Too bad there's not a happiness meter.

And also in the serious stage, there should be a chance of passing out, in which case your inventory becomes vulnerable to thieving.

The alcohol could also be used to clean up things up for surgery. Though that will only have its uses if there will be some really interesting diseases coming up.

Beer is just food, or healing food. No real effect in game other then any other food. But there is nothing preventing chars from roleplaying drinking, drunkness etc. It is even popular in few places for few chars, and it is ok.

But if we have the drunkeness bar it makes sense to implement drunkeness. Consider this a person in Cantr can theoreticaly drink an ifinate amount of wine in the game without suffering any side effects except a empty inventory.

Random attacks on other people while drunk?
Using fists of course (or knife for the finnish ;) )

* You see a very drunken man in his 40:s puke at the corner of [building] and pass out.

You could activate random capitalization when a char is drunk.

"oH, MY goD. i dRAnk toO mUch."

Regretably we won't ever find out whether some characters are drunk or not.

I think drunkness can have the same effect as tiredness: reduced strength and abilities, and easier to drag.

Beside this, any other effects should be RPied.

I agree with fkahf, the game system could limit what a drunken player CAN do, but should not prescribe what he actually DOES.

I really think that the drunkness bar should be put to use or removed. All it does right now is be a always full bar. (note that was a pun about beer)
