One third of 15 characters is 5. They eat the salted and smoked meat.

The rest (10) do not eat smoked or salted meat. 1 does occasiaonally.

I have seen through my characters a good increase in higher
production cost foods.

I do see the need for higher demand of other foods.
I just can not see hampering smoked meat to create the need.
I would rather see other foods being made more nutritious.
I know it is not easy to redo the values.
I just say do not cripple the little guys.

They aren't just foods with one of the biggest outputs per day of labour.

They are top class on output, weight per meal, project limit, project complexity, machine complexity and places where you can prepare it.

It's like if bone spears were the best weapon by far.

Anything else lacks of purpose, so we would better remove food altogether, instead of letting characters struggle to make useless machines and meals.

What's the problem with tunning down any of their many top class properties? Would 30 grams per meal at the same output per day kill anyone? Seriously? Really absolutelly seriously? Is that so encumbering that will stop all trade, and travelling, and life, and make the heaven fall on their heads, and make the server lag, and kill all sheep, and sink all ships?

What do you think then about all the complex cooked food that is way over 40 grams per meal, and more expensive to prepare, and available only indoors? Omg any community living on any of those will die in a few days!

Stay away bread an cheese of evil, you orphan-makers!

personally i like dried meat. Sure, the output rate is crap, but you can do something else while its being made, and its eaten at the same rate as smoked meat.

plus, you can make a lot of it at once. If you have 10 drying racks, you can net 1000 grams of dryed meat a day.

You can only have 4 per town.
