There were also versions of the duster containing small knives and/or single shot pistols. The Royal Amouries in Leeds has alot in thier collection.

I prefere using a thumb ring when shooting, though I wear it on top of gauntlets.

I think there should be a chance for the string to snap and injure you. Therefore bracers would have a use.

Not if you took good care of the bowstring. But back then, especially in the midst of combat or in the middle of the wilderness, it was hard to take care of your equipment.

I'm a tab shooter myself. I hate release and I could never get use to the glove. I don't bother to wear an armguard. It is more of a nusance to me then safety. Plus, it teaches you a fine lesson in shooting archery when you get hit in the arm with the string. It means you are shooting the bow wrong.
