Character Cleanliness

Postby Missy » Sat Nov 13, 2004 3:09 pm

Somewhere in another thread, bath houses were mentioned.
However this whole topic, I'd like to devote to character hygene over-all.

Some things I'd like to see:
Brushes
Mirrors
toothpaste (can be made somehow, I'm sure.)
Razor
Soap

Currently I'm very interested in the idea of bath houses. Though, I think their possibility of being built should be difficult. (Thus I suggest that the building requires more than one type of material. I also suggest introducing marble or granite as a resource.) Perhaps the bath-house could require stone, granite/marble and clay. You'd need new types of tools to work with the marble I imagine. So you couldn't just build a bath house with a trowel alone. I think it would be acceptable to require water for the bath-house as well. Either when building it. Or water could later be used in the bath house as a project in the bath-house in order to become less "dirty."

Something less sophisticated to use for character hygene would be pitchers and basins. Pitchers and basins could be made of clay or glass either one.

Also I suggest aluminum/tin tubs. They aren't so very big as bath tubs today, and nor do they have any plumbing. But are filled with water when bath time rolls around.

Well, I've been searching, but so far no luck. Though I did find this yucky article. http://www.happywomanmagazine.com/Ficti ... hpaste.htm

The first toothpaste mentioned in recorded history was devised by Egyptian physicians about four thousand years ago. Highly abrasive and puckeringly pungent, it was made from powdered pumice stone and strong wine vinegar and brushed on with a chew stick. By modern standards, it was considerably more palatable than early Roman toothpaste, made from human urine—which in liquid form served also as a mouthwash. First-century Roman physicians maintained that brushing with urine whitened teeth and fixed them more firmly in the sockets.

I swear I learned somewhere that algae or maybe it was even seaweed that was used in toothpaste.

Okay, I did some research. :) On toothepaste.

http://www.mii.org/Minerals/phototrona.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_bicarbonate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_carbonate

Toothpaste does in fact use seaweed, though I'm not certain it's the same kind we currently use in Cantr. Something called carrageenan deriving of seaweed is what helps it stick together.

Basic recipe for toothpaste is:
1/2 teaspoon calcium carbonate, 1/4 teaspoon sodium bicarbonate in a small plastic cup, add just enough water (with eye dropper) to make a paste
Materials
Calcium carbonate (finely powdered unflavored TUMS will work)
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

I found the above recipe on some site, but I forget which and can't find it again.

In either case, (and I don't know a great deal about elements or minerals,) But the calcium carbonate would mostly come from limestone (unless we have shell fish which can also be used), and the soda ic would be the sodium bicarbonate. + Water and perhaps other herbs/spices for flavoring. Such as mint. A pestle could be used. (Though I'm sure there is a little more to the process than this, I think this is about right?)

When desperate you can always rinse your mouth sand to clean your teeth.

*Reads the urine thing*

Don't even need sand, if cantrians pee. And we can just cup our hands, assuming we have them, to hold it. We already brush our teeth then. Don't even need to add a thing.
Reality was never my strong point.

I wasn't actually suggesting we use urine IC, just in case anyone thought that. Just thought it was interesting.

In any case. (I mostly posted this cuz I'm so interested in the bath house.) However, also because the dirtyness bar.

I don't know if there is an idea of how characters will become clean again, but for all of the things I mentioned above, mostly I can only imagine that it would require projects somehow.

My first idea is:

We currently have an eat icon, which helps us heal. In the same manner, there could be an icon created for hygene but serve the same purpose as the eat button. It would be like you were consuming the product, only you couldn't use the eat button to shave/hygene button to eat. When you've done and finnished "shaving" using so many grams of soap--It will/might say "You've used __grams of soap to restore ___hygene"
I don't care much for this above suggestion.

My other idea is that all forms of hygene must require a project + something that would serve as machinary.

For instance i suggested tin tub/vase and basin/mirror. These could all be considered machines so that the other tools and smaller items could serve a function.

IE You make your toothpaste up, and you make a mirror inside your little cottage. Well the mirror would have an icon like any machinary does (ie the harvester, oven) You'd *click* the use button and select the project. Perhaps it would say- Shave legs, brush teeth, shave face, comb hair.

---The brush teeth project would require a very small amount of water and your mixed up tooth paste. After added you could start working on the project, but only if you had a toothbrush in your inventory.
---For shaving legs/face it would be the same only you'd use soap and need a razor in your inventory in order to work on the project.
These small things (in my vision) shouldn't restore very much cleanliness to your character. Perhaps 1-2%

The bigger items, like wash basin/tin tub/bath house, Would require large amounts of water and soap, and restore cleanliness much better/faster

However, I'd also suggest the rate at which one gets dirty is much slower than the rate at which one gets tired. Considering doing the above things is "working on a project" OR maybe somehow, you could make it so that these things ONLY effected one's cleanliness and nothing else.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe there could be an alternative bath as well, t hat not only required soap and water for cleanliness, but some type of herbal (suchness) for reducing tiredness or for healing.
