Minor thing..

Postby N-Aldwitch » Mon Jan 22, 2007 4:41 am

Is it possible to change

1783-4.26: BOAT_NAME adjusts its speed to 100 percent and its direction to 200.

to

1783-4.26: Bob adjusts BOAT_NAME's speed to 100 percent and its direction to 200.

??

edit: because it's not really the boat changing the direction and speed, it's the controller. :P
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

Fair suggestion IMO, and useful to figure out if someone is messing with the direction the boat is heading. It shouldn't be to hard to implement either, it just has to record who changed the direction.

Yes, and maybe to road vehicles too.

A very good idea but if the person is not named, the capitalization would be incorrect. I think that's why all Cantr sentences start with "You see", how ever stupid that sounds.

Would it be possible to do some trick that automatically capitalizes the first letter of an event? Then we could loose all the needless "You see"s.

Why not then, "You see Bob adjust..."

I hate to go off-topic here, but I think the "you see" part is an important aspect of the game.

The "you see"s,"you hear"s and "you notice"s help to emphasize the fact that we observe the game from our character's eyes, and not from a god's-eye view. They certainly give the game a certain atmosphere we have gotten used to. If they weren't there, the in-character feel would weaken.

"You see Seko pick up a hammer" tells me that I am someone in the same environment with Seko, and I have just observed an event with my eyes. It puts me close to the event, since I can see it, I probably can also interact with it.

All "Seko picks up a hammer" tells me is there is an environment, in which Seko and a hammer reside, and an event happened there. I don't feel attached to this environment at all.

It's a little awkward to try to tell it like this, but if the "you see" part was removed the whole feel of the game would be changed. For worse in my opinion.

But it also says "You see X sneezing", not you hear. And also "You see a man in his twenties talking to a woman in her twenties". Too many things have "you see" on them, which dulls the other senses. When someone's whispering, you may see their lips moving but what really catches your attention is the silent voices you can't quite grasp.

Yigit brings up a very important point.

The You see should definatley start it off, but then why can't the game tell me who changes the direction of the boat? It tells me who picks up 1 gram of carrots, but not who turns around a raker? It could use the same format as other events you see people do.

I agree with Yigit and the...

You see Bob heading the ship/boat towards DIRECTION degrees at SPEED% of its speed

Or something similar.

And... to use more sailing vocabulary would be better for RPing, so if it is possible and easy to change the concret numbers for direcction and speed to more general words like: north, north-northeast, northeast, east-northeast... for the direction and full-throttle, cruise-speed, medium-speed...

Using words instead of numbers sounds like a nice idea. If they want to see the exact heading, they can always go to the location page to check it, so it wouldn't be a loss.
