Seeing if there's people on the roads nearby

Postby SekoETC » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:28 am

This would help the neurotic feeling when stopping somewhere on a boat with no lock.

The idea: You would have an eye button on roads, just like for corpses. When you click on it, you'd see a list of people less than a day's travel away. But maybe for the ones that are nearling the limits of your vision, you'd only see "there's X people whose identity you can't quite confirm". Maybe they'd all be like that, maybe it would just say "you look at road X where you see Y people" and maybe "coming towards you and Z going in the opposite direction". Would help with noticing where thieves went too, now that you can't see the direction of people who left.

That would be very useful, especially in situations where you're chasing a thief out of a building in a small community. At the moment, if there's no-one awake outside, you have to guess which road to take and then, even if you turn around immediately you realise you're on the wrong one, it takes a certain amount of time to return to the town. By then, you've probably missed any conversation that has gone on about the direction the thief took and so they increase their headstart while you take another guess or two.

The option to look a little way down a path would be very useful and I imagine it wouldn't be too hard, as the "who's in range?" option is already implemented for those travelling down a path.

I like it. :) On a similar note, I think windows in buildings could be implemented in much the same way. It would be very handy during seiges, so you can glance outside to count the bad guys rather than having to step outside and be drug away.

Shh, let's not let this turn into a window topic! (Besides, how could you determine the distance of a person on the yard, if it's all in one spot? Therefore you would see everybody... but they couldn't see you.)

How about the opposite direction? Could you see how many people are in a location when you're near enough on the road to that location?

Looking in the opposite direction could be handy but it's probably less useful - you'd have to travel almost all the way along the length of the road and then be logged on at the right time to check the information without inadvertantly ending up in the location.

Maybe views in both directions could be similar to being on a vehicle, where you get some limited interaction but can't see everything that goes on or view what's on the ground?

Yeah, if you've spent days travelling, I doubt you'd turn back unless seeing someone who's after your life. And even in that case since they may have checked the road as well, you might as well make a dash for it, through the village and hope that they won't bother to follow. But to make things fair, people on the road should be able to check the amount of people in their destination and when close enough, the detailed list of people. Hmm, I just came to think, there could be three steps, first seeing only the amount of people, second: seeing the names of people or men in their twenties and stuff for the unknown, but the descriptions and bars would be blanked out, and then when you're really close, like an hour's travel away, you could also see woundedness, tiredness and clothing.

Teehee, just thinking, someone on the road to Kiii would click the button several times during a short period of time... 18 people, 19 people, 18 people, 19 people - ah, Jaina is probably running around again.
