Animals/Animaux

Postby Doug R. » Thu Apr 19, 2007 3:00 am

Greetings! I'm the new Resource Department Shepherd, charged with keeping watch over the animals in Cantr. I'm starting this thread so I can get feedback from all the language groups about the animal situations on their islands. Your feedback is appreciated, even if (especially if) everything is perfect (if it's not broke, don't fix it).

You have a lot of optimism, I'am waiting for any answer on this forum almost month! :D
I can only say that in some of places on french island is hard to survive because they are many of dangerous animals and people must stay all the time in buildings.
Sorry for my english  :?

It's tough on the french island, because the population is so limited and the tech level isn't overly high, outside of a couple key communities. It's not THAT bad, though, once you get a steady shield, but the soaring wild boar population is very, very hard to control. It makes for interesting culture, but it's definatly a difficult road to industrial progression, etc.

Most characters don't have access to iron shields, good weapons or healing food. With an average of more than 100 aggressive animals per location I've seen, you don't expect to survive more than 5 days or so if you can't go into a building, e. g. because you need to collect food, healing food or wood for preparing meat. A lot of communities have made efforts to chase animals as much as humanly possible, but with "flourishing" communities being at most 8 active people, they can't kill animals more quickly than they multiply.

Another problem is that some characters can get seriously injured by animals even though they have iron shields. They are just too weak, or maybe the animals are too strong.

I've begun manually capping the Bear and Boar population levels at 20. It will take probably three weeks or more for an island-wide effect to be noticable (since animals have to cycle through off the roads).

Please let me know if 20 is reasonable, or if it needs to go lower.

Without iron shields you can't survive outside, which definitely hampers any progress. You first have to build up something before you are able to produce iron shields...it's a vicious cycle.

Yea, 20 is too high. I haven't done any manual capping in a while, so it might be time to go through and do a check.

Not really. Work has picked up and I'm buying a house. Plus, the island seeding tool is buggy and I'm waiting for a new one.

Bears and boars have been zapped again. Let me know if they get troublesome.

BTW, what do you call this island? Do the members of the other language groups on this island call it the same thing?

The boars and bears grow too quickly. Yesterday, after your change, 11 boars and now 19 boars. That's impossible to fight against them. In a few days they'll be 50 or more.
