I've just been to the funeral of my brother's wife. She came from Tristan da Cunha, reputedly the most isolated human settlement on the globe, an island in the south Atlantic. She was evacuated, with all the other islanders in 1961 when the volcano erupted. Many of the islanders returned and they have their own website, containing pictures, I believe, of the Tristan longboats, on which the initial evacuation, (to a neighbouring island,) was carried out. Their economy is based on potatoes and fishing.

Huh? No offence with jokes. It's just that her death reminded me of Tristan and looked it up on the web. At the funeral the vicar was talking about longboats, (all the usual guff... Jesus is our longboat that will save us,) and that's what triggered it all off.
They were a very nice set of people, the Tristans, with, at their arrival, a very odd form of English. I don't know what the web site told you, but the present inhabitants all stem from shipwrecks around 1839. There are only 7 different surnames on the place, partly English, partly Italian.
The first postage stamp I saw from there had imprinted on it: "Local value, 2 potatoes". All the Tristans I spoke to said this was a joke, but who knows?

Have you looked at the map? it's got some great names, my favourite has got to be Ridge where the goat jump off followed by Pigbite. Of course the main settlement name is the best, Edinburgh, I'm from Edinburgh, Scotland. And it has Carlisle Beach, my Dad's from Carlisle, Cumbria, small world eh?
