Other Games

Just to keep people from going OT on the other topic, let's keep discussion and advertisement about our non-cantr, blasphemous games in this thread.

Personally, I have played Ogre Island in the past, around the time I started Cantr... and eventually gave it up to play Cantr more.

It's a lot like runescape, with the mining, and smelting, and forging and whatnot. However, the environment is a lot better because there are much less idiots.

Medievia is a MUD I have played for many years, on and off. It's probably the most popular MUD out there. And if you're not adverse to text games, which most people are, but you guys are playing Cantr so, you probably aren't; you might want to give it a shot.

I dabbled a bit in Achaea today. It's an interesting fantasy-based MUD, and I like a lot of the concepts in it but I doubt I'll ever be distracted enough from my mainstays to play it.

I was actually about to post a World of Warcraft-related thread.

I have played WoW off and on since October of this year; I have a 47 Dwarf Hunter on Kil'Jaeden and my current favorite alt is a lvl 10 Tauren Druid on Wildhammer. (Kil'Jaeden is one of the oldest servers, and so it's always got a high population, and since Christmas (and the opening of the Ahn-Qiraj gates) the lines to get in and lag once your in are making it almost unplayable, hence the alt)

I know at least half-a-dozen of you play WoW; I expect confessions!

Oh and PvP servers are the only way to fly.

I think I already posted about most games I played :) ...

I played for about two years in UCIP, which is basically roleplay by email, totally freestyle, in a Star Trek context. It was fun, especially as a challenge to try to write nice fiction, but the culture among staff is very much one of backstabbing and infights. (Which, despite many rumours to the contrary, hardly happens in Cantr.)

I played for about two weeks in Entropia. Slightly Cantr-like, except more focus on hunting, and much less freestyle. And like most of those online games, a lot of the chatting is really out-of-character rather than in-character - the one fact I always hate about most of those games. The genius invention of the game is to have a direct exchange rate of the in-game currency with the dollar. Their graphics are stunning - I almost got afraid of heights when climbing a mountain in-game :) ... If only Cantr could look like that ;) ... The game gets boring very quickly, though.

I played for even shorter EVE Online. Very nice graphics. Much like Entropia but with space ships. Gets boring quickly.

I played for a few weeks Renaissance Kingdoms, which is probably the game closest to Cantr I've ever seen. But more pre-defined structure and, worst, most of the RP happens on the forum rather than in the game. As usual, in-character development is totally confused with out-of-character development.

Two days ago I discovered (was pointed at) Dofus. Again similar to Cantr or Entropia in game design, very nice graphics somewhere in between 2d and 3d (2d but with 3d effect), loads and loads of players, and relatively simple game. Very nice newbie introduction. But again, I'm bored in notime :) ... Still checking it out, though.

I started playing online games with Lorenai, but that's not online anymore. It was email-based, but not freestyle. It was more like a strategy games where you have loads of military units which you have to move around, and every day the turn runs an update on the basis of the instructions all players sent in.

The lack of freestyle in Lorenai, and the lack of structure and challenge in UCIP, were more or less what made me write Cantr. The lack of roleplay in Cantr-like games is what keeps me enthousiast about Cantr :) ...

Allright, I dabble...
Cypher, yoinked from hallucinatingfarmer's signature. You play a hacker, and... hack stuff. I got bored in two days or so. Farmer can probably give a better account of it.
The Endless Forest, where you play a deer. Sniff people in the butt, roar and move about. That's what you can do, appaerently. Can't even talk properly. Seems like a cool concept, but doesn't work on my computer. (You know you have a crap computer when free stuff doesn't run on it.)
Urban Dead, where you play a survivor in a zombie movie. Or something. Move around, beat up zombies, move around some more. Got bored in three days. (That's practically addictive for me.)
Puzzle Pirates, excellent little game for blowing an hour or two. You play a pirate, traveling around an archipelago and challenging people in different games (fighting is a game, yes, since you can't actually die). Everything you do is represented by playing some sort of game (usually a Tetris spinoff, but card games are in there too). I'm on hiatus now, but not really bored with it.
Gunz Online, mentioned for completeness. It's a MMO-FPS (or something). You level, and stuff like that from other MMORRPGs, however, you can choose to only play against people close to your own level, so it's not like you're screwed in the beginning. Fun way to blow a few hours. Has lots of 1337-speakers and hackers, though.

I suggest people have a look at SEED It's still in beta testing (which you can sign up for) and is due for the summer. There's no combat system in the game at all, the primary focus is political and social. Also, check out the forums, the community is really very heavily into their RP. There's a general consensus that the (current) community plans to play the game as primarily an in character RP game.

I played Entropia for a while, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. It claimed you could convert Real money into game money and vice versa, but at no point did they come clean and say that the only way you can start to play is to convert a fair amount of money into IG money.

I still play EVE fairly regularly. It got boring for a bit, but I found some things to keep me interested. Like all MMORPGs, EVE is full of ooc chatter all the time. But EVE seems to have more RPers than other MMORPGs, joining up with them has been what's kept it interesting for me.

Oh, yeah, and as Helzon said, Cypher which is a 'hcaking' game. It's appeal is probably very limited to Cantr players though. It's basic premise is very similar to the game Uplink which never received the popularity it deserves. You play a hacker, you hack stuff, you buy software, you buy hardware, you hack more stuff, you program things, flog them, hack a bit more, raise up the ranks etc etc. The scope is very limited and probably a bit boring if you're not a fan of cyberpunk crap like me...

On that note, I played CYBERSPHERE for a bit, it's a text based mmorpg, works much like the old text adventures from decades back, but is multiplayer. Only really interesting for hardcore cyberpunk weirdos like me...

My roommate has 4 level 60's and 2 level 58's on WoW - I didn't ask what type or where - I just know he spends every hour not at work or in bed (those are few) on that damn game since August.

Glad I actually have a life.

Utopia- I find it entertaining. I played it for about two or three years straight about three years ago. Actually, it's where I met my friend that got me into Cantr... Full cycle? lol anyway... I'm sure several have heard of it or seen it on the voting sites (I know every single person that visits the forums also votes religiously for Cantr ;)).

The recent Cantr downtime made me sign up for it again. It only really requires once a day login and is more tactical in some ways I guess... gotta figure out how to work your lands to the best and use the best tactics for when you go to war. Or whatever. It's not much on RP.. though I've seen some RP in the kingdom forums. Not a bad game... though I definitely think nothing can come close to Cantr. :)

And I would play my brand-new-never-been-opened WoW, but... I can't until I get my new comp back.

SHAMELESS PLUG!

I'm working on a web-based game, which is about 40-50% completed as far as my features are concerned...but entirely "playable" by other characters. I hope to make it a cross between a classic "Kill-critter/get gold/buy stuff/kill-bigger-critter" type of game, and a vague sort of fantasy economy with various crafting skills (kinda like CANTR!).
Surprisingly, I have been working on this long before I found CANTR, three weeks ago, but the end-result of a society-thingy is almost spookily similar.

Check it out if you want...
I would LOVE input on making the less hack&slash stuff more feasible and player-friendly. I'm also struggling with trying to impliment a more RP-friendly setting, but don't have the creative muse striking me yet. Extra eyes would be most welcome there!

I also need to expand the worldmap from the sad little islands currently, but that's more brute-force dataentry than anything. :)

I can definitely see potential in that game.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Work on the map to make it larger.

2. Make the "animals" and "monsters" playing characters instead of game controlled. That way the monsters will have goals.

3. Start the characters with more HP's.

4. Create activities to do in the locations like farming or hunting game, etc.

5. Make the travel times longer so there is an incentive to stay somewhere unless you want to accomplish something, but there has to be something to do in those locations first.

Those are just a few ideas from my short play time in which I died.
