Yes, but the only reason that there are male and female characters is because Jos put it in there, I'm assuming because it would seem unnatural not too. I very much doubt he thought all that much into it.

As for people having sex for fun, it's very true many many people do it simply for fun with no intention of having children, but see, the reason that it is fun is so that people (and everything else that has sex) will reproduce. If it was not fun, nobody would do it. It would be a pointless investement. Children are impractical, very difficult to give birth to, must be fed, and are largely useless and completly dependant for a number of years. If having sex were not fun, people (and things) that had offspring would be in the minority, and everything would go extinct.

That's why sex is pleasurable. If it weren't, if wouldn't ever happen. It's the Master Plan, my friend.

If people did not have to have children, then there would be no reason for sex to be pleasurable, and so it wouldn't be.

I just thought it was kind of an instinct to want to reproduce.

Yeah. Okay. So the whole pleasurable thing that Schme said don't work right?

Not exactly... the reproduction part is the biological instinct... but there's a level of psychological factors that have to be satisfied as well... for the pleasure part... which is why there are things like fetishes and etc...

No, the innate need to spread one's genes for trait survival is the instinct.

No it's not.

Yes it is.

Edit:

If genes aren't spread and carried on, they die. When they die, the person's biological influence in the world dies. There is a drive to protect this from happening and the means is by reproduction and spreading the genes to new generations. That is the instinct; The "gotta get my genes out there so my biological legacy can live on" instinct so to speak. The fact that it's pleasureable only enhances the experience, but the underlying reasons are always the same.

(Oh, and I think this part of the topic should be split or something by now.. no need in cluttering up this thread with it.)

I suspect Schme's point is that the instinct may be the result of the fundamental evolutionary pressure, but that the instinct itself has nothing to do with 'genes'. If it did, Mendel's work would be pre-programmed into every newborn.

There are various genetically programmed pressures to make sure a human (or whatever) doesn't just decide not to bother reproducing. Enjoying the process itself is one of them, but I don't think it's the only one...

The human is also not the only species on earth to have sex for pleasure.

I was always told that we were the only ones.

Which makes me angry because I've been taught false information.

Yes. The genes aren't telling you to do a damn thing. They're just a result of heredity.

Pretty well every creature gets pleasure from sex, with the exception of insects and suchlike, as flies and things cannot feel anything, although I do believe they get the equivalent of the chemical high.

And yes, pleasure is not the sole reason for sex. Our bodies also give us chemical imbalances to make us take a liking to our offspring and such.

It really is all wonderful layed out.

What that is supposed to mean is that humans are the only creatures that circumvent the reproduction and take only the pleasure from intercourse.

Bears and eagles don't wear condoms.
