Issue #1 - WOL Update

Note: Before I copy+paste this.... I'm upstairs on my new fancy laptop with wireless connection... This internet has dropped out so many times, and it's only my lucky tonight that it's still on.

Also, incase you're wondering what this is, it's the progress report on my 2D Cantr-like game. It has no reference to Cantr whatsoever, is losely based on the physics and ideals of Cantr, and is multiplayable and can be run easily on any computer. (when complete).

Finally, these are the update notes a) I wrote 2 nights ago and b) BETA notes, not final-game notes. It is only beginning. Ohhh c) the Map is friggin huge!

Update/Patch Notes: Issue #1

World of Lorin
Beta Version 0.15

Overall: 1.7%

Progress Notes:
-Map named Beta Island- just a test island to see how the game goes/flows
-Have begun the map. It's absolutely huge! And it’s the Beta Island! To be exact… I’ll get the size now… Yes, 7,000 by 2,000! It might not sound like much, but it’s an aweful lot of work and mapping and compression for a single programmer who’s also the graphics and textures design. For those not too familiar with computers, a general screen size is 800X600, or 1024X768. The game window will be 640X480, and the visibility of your character will possibly be less- even down to a mere 400X180. That means you will be seeing 400 pixels out of 7,000, and 180 pixels out of 2,000!
-Map due to have three significant areas- a northern grassland with a minimal amount of forest area, in the middle of the isle/island a mountainous area (which will in future take time to travel through) and a southern snowland.
-Have created a very low-quality person. Hope to add a second frame to it with a leg movement. Will face north, east, south and west, and future animations will face over 12 directions… hopefully.

Actual Progress/Numbers/Statistics:
(please note that this progress IS ONLY FOR THE BETA. That means, it is not the progress for the actual game release. Hence, these will be shorter, and less realistic.)

[Graphics]
Map: 13%
Player: 25% (for now, it’s simple graphics)

[Code]
Player movement: 0%
Environment- 0%
-Effects: 0%
-Interactability(is that a word?): 0%
Construction: 0%
Harvesting/Gathering: 0%
AI(animals): 0%
Networking: 95%
-Applied: 30%
-Server-based: 10%
Interaction(P2P chat, fighting, trading): 22%

[Staff]
Admins: 1/1 [0 needed]
Moderators: 0/5 [5 needed]
Beta Testers: 0/5 [5 needed]
Programmers: 1/3 [2 needed, 5+ preferred] [must know general C++]
Graphic Designers: 1 [0 needed, unless you’re really good and can make 3D graphics (for later version) better than me ;) ]

Projected Completion Date:

Note, this is based on current staff.

February 10th

There will be plenty more to write about in future issues, for now, it’s pretty basic.

What are you using for scripting it?

For the initial creation of the Beta, a drag-n-drop's language section- as in, I'm not using the drag-n-drop, just the area which corrects your code etcetera. It is very similar to C++, and can export it to many C++ editors. Once I (or it could be We) begin the real game, we'll jump off the drag-n-drop'er and use a real program- I just want to use this program for speed right now. (and, making what I said redundant, using a tiny little bit of drag and drop for the map. :P )

It's true that game makers is object driven and has classes in it's scripted language but it's far from what c++ is

And it's almost impossible to make a mmorpg that isn't laggy with GM.

Oh and could somebody move this to non cantr related?

As long as you make this game compatable with cantr, as in, with the same EXACT SAME map and website and phisics and caracters(Such as..l. MINE!!!), then I will convert to your side

Sorry pie, I'm not allowed- I've already been shunned off the General Chat with this post...

Otherwise, you're both welcome to beta test when I release Beta 1.0 (currently at 0.15 :P )

Err?

Shouldn't topics not concerning Cantr go in the Non-Cantr-Related Discussion forum?

Umm... It definately concerns Cantr. Want to know why?
a) Will have a www.cantr.net advertisement
b) Will be a copied Cantr map in future
c) All characters due to be transferred and actively updated (so you can play either and your character is the same)

And it has no Cantr relevance?
It's a viscious cycle, I get kicked off General, this becomes non-cantr related. When it actually was.

That's just wrong.

Can GAC clarify what's going on here?

This is Thetaris's independent graphical game, modeled after Cantr. GAC has nothing to do with it; as far as I know, they haven't said anything for or against it.

General Discussion is reserved for issues relating to things actually in Cantr - events, rules, programming changes, resources, and so on. Discussion about the players and the community should be here, usually.

Thanks for pointing that out clearly, saved me some typing.

Mmm, but I thought this was up for General Discussion, because it involved the players, and their characters being migrated to a server of my own, and whether or not they liked that, and how much of Cantr would be implemented, how much would be left out, etcetera.

How is that wrong? Firstly, I'm introducing more players to Cantr by a means many real-gamers prefer (hehe, even though I play Cantr one minute, then World of Warcraft or Doom 3 the next :P ), and advertising a great game! At the same time I'm boosting my career, creating my first, and full, game, assisting Cantr, and occupying myself with something to do.

It's all thumbs up. There is little argument against it, besides the fact that players will leave .net and come to the graphical version. Which I will limit somehow.

We've discussed it informally with one or two high-up staff members on General Discussion before. I'd get the post if I wasn't lazy.

(it might be called '2D Cantr Game- made by me?' or something ;) )

Let's just say nobody's moving my characters without my consent, for starters, and secondly, to make any insinuation of the sort is an easy way not only to lose my support, but to have my very active opposition to it.

However, if this is something the Game Administration Council is supporting unanimously and is happening as you detail without 'forcing my characters into this world', I would be less skeptical about it.

Do I hear rumors of Jos trying to part with his brainchild?
