Compiler advice

Right now I'm studying to make video games (as I'm sure some of you have read). Any way I'm trying to teach myself and I'm having a little bit of a hard time.
My main reading material for this is "Sams Teach Yourself : Game Programming in 24 hrs". Well I figured I wasn't going to learn anything in 2 hrs lol.
Now, I needed a compiler to even begin understanding what the hell they are talking about... So I began a search and found a free one which I've downloaded and installed without any problem. I even took it for a test run and it seems to work
Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the kinds of compilers out there.
I have a Bloodshed Dev C++ version 4.9.9.2.
Is this one any good or should I not bother? If it is garbage, which would you recomend?
