Compiler advice

Right now I'm studying to make video games (as I'm sure some of you have read). Any way I'm trying to teach myself and I'm having a little bit of a hard time.
My main reading material for this is "Sams Teach Yourself : Game Programming in 24 hrs". Well I figured I wasn't going to learn anything in 2 hrs lol.
Now, I needed a compiler to even begin understanding what the hell they are talking about... So I began a search and found a free one which I've downloaded and installed without any problem. I even took it for a test run and it seems to work :D
Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the kinds of compilers out there.
I have a Bloodshed Dev C++ version 4.9.9.2.
Is this one any good or should I not bother? If it is garbage, which would you recomend?

Bloodshed worked well enough for me to get me through the first dozen chapters of Sam's. I think at this level a compiler is a compiler. You'll probably just get confused by bells and whistles at this point anyway.

You're telling me... I have absolutely no programming experience of any kind. To just start learning about making games from scratch is quite the adventure.
How did you like sams btw? Did it help a lot?

Sam's is awesome if you haven't got clue one about programming. It's the best organized book that I came across while browsing. Compared to the little bit of Python I've taught myself from reading O'Reilly manuals...:shock:....it's a godsend.
