Bitmap Image Help...

I can't open bitmap images on my comp. When I try I get a dialogue box that says:
:!:

"Paint"
- C:\My.bmp was not found

No matter what the name of the .bmp file is. ( it could be: bgdfkjbvhfdvbsjkvhbv.bmp and the dialogue will still pop up)
Anyone know what that is all about ?

No, but can you save a bitmap called my.bmp and save it on the root of the C: drive and see what happens...then your machine will find the file, if it's looking for it.

don't use windows?

ok - I know that's not helpful...

Either

1) Re-install paint (I can't tell you how to do that exactly - I hardly ever use any windows native programs if I can help it)
Although it sounds like it's most likely a problem with the registry details somewhere - google for 'My.bmp paint' or something like that...

2) Install a better 'paint' programme - GIMP is good - but that's bordering on the Photoshop level of sophistication - look for 'freeware paint for windows' on google - see what it comes up with - there should be an option to install it as the default application for .bmp files

The GIMP is a great program, and one worth getting, especially if you don't want to pirate photoshop (or it is a work computer where pirated software is even more dangerous. I personally like the GIMP better then photoshop, but that is just my personal preferance).

Ok....This is just a guess, but it looks like your "Paint" icon is actually a shortcut to a file called my.bmp.

Delete the icon and go to the file under the start menu. If you're already going to the program thru the start menu, then I'm all out of ideas.

are you sure you're looking in the right folder? Usually your bitmaps will all be saved in the same folder, which isn't usually the root.

It really does sound like a registry problem... Or a virus?
