Killer Cola

Postby formerly known as hf » Wed Apr 20, 2005 12:51 am

Ok, rather than hijack my own thread...

I'm quite happy, as over easter, a motion was passed by the NUS (that's the National Uniion of Students) in the UK. Though not quite what was hoped for (a total ban) it makes the posibility of non-renewal of the contract much closer.

Basically, the NUSSL (the money making part of NUS) has contracts, of about £5m, with coca cola, to supply drinks for unions around the UK. After long campaigining, and a bit of last minute organisation, a motion was carried to approve an NUS study into the actions of the coca cola corporation, and that any contract renewal should be based on these findings...

With links to the columbian solidarity campaign, and killercola.org, it should be easy to get the aspect of those opposed to coca cola clearly theough the the NUS research team. Hopefully, if cola are not seen to be changing, it could lead to the possibility of a total NUS boycott of cola. Loosing coca cola a student market of millions... With the threat of this ban, cola may now have to start co-operating somewhat

No idea what I'm on about? Thought that Coca Cola was the most wonderful drink in the world?...

There are two main issues - one, the poisoning and (in some cases absolute) depletion of ground water reserves in India (in the state of Kerala)
- Here, a coca cola factory, has used so much of the natural sources of water, that villages have been deserted, families uprooted. Estimates vary, but up to 800,000 people may have been made homeless from this one factory...

In columbia, a number of trade union activists, petitioning for better conditions in cola factories, were killed. This was blamed on the work of local paramilitaries. Yet there are some clear links between those that may have been responsible for the killings, and funding by coca cola...

For more info - see the links in my sig...

Just so long as Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and A&W are still around, more power to you.

Don't really care for Coke products for some reason. I dunno why.

Is this a problem only in the UK?

is the death of columbians and the displacement of indians by a multinational company only an issue in the UK?... No...

I guess you meant the NUS motions - that's a UK only thing, but there are similar protests in the US, Canada, and most other places...

Nice! Made me laugh out loud.

But of course, it can always be snorted.

To go off topic a little bit, I tripped over a crackhead on the way home the other day. We had a very funny altercation.

Anyhow.

Can I at least finish the box of Coke in my refrigerator? Hahaha.....

No coffee? *twitches at the prospect* You can't takes away our coffees. My...my...preciousss coffees...

It's the only 100% legal drug we have left. Thank you social hypocrisy. You pay off for once!

I don't mean to be making light of your cause farmer. I'm sure the company is doing lots of horrible stuff around the world. All companies do horrible stuff around the world. I hear all the factories in northwest Indiana (Gary area) did the same thing to the water table up there. All this stuff you are sharing that is happening to the Columbians and Indians sounds terrible, and I hope their governments are able to do something to protect the people being affected.

What? With the less than no money they have left after debt? Facing the legal teams of multinationals with billion $ fundings...
