As it reads above, Serenity will not be released on April 22nd , 2005 as originally set by Universal. Universal has now placed the release date back by 5 months for a September 30th, 2005 release.

This is not good news as this means that Universal doesn't believe it can compete and is now placed during one of the worse cinema periods in the year. But it looks like we will still see the movie eventually but not for almost another year now. Bad news in that Universal doesn't feel that Serenity will do well and might eventually scrap the movie. There are already rumors that Serenity might not get a theatrical release and might instead get a direct to DVD release or at best a TV movie on Sci-Fi but hope for the cancelled but popular TV show of Firefly is looking very grim as of this week.

:x :(

Well according to Haken's post on fireflyfans.net Joss is pretty optimistic about the release date change, he said Universal were pretty happy and that a September release would benefit the film.

But don't get me wrong I'm gutted we have to wait longer too, but being in the UK means you don't always get a film on the big screen even if it does in the USA. And even when we do it can be up to a year later! :(

I can also quite frequently buy the region 1 DVD of a film on Amazon (or better still PlayUSA.com) before it comes out on the big screen in the UK.
