Can you solve this?

Postby jeslange » Thu Sep 23, 2004 12:27 am

People who've correctly solved:
1st: joshua johnson
2nd:SekoETC
3rd:Oasis
4th:Sho

*You must PM your answer to me. If you put it here, it won't count.

Fact: There are glasses hanging from each of the 8 rows of a rack above a bar.
Clues...
1. Row 3 contains 1 less glass than row 2, and one more glass than row 4.
2. 33 glasses have no coloring.
3. Of the wine glasses, 6 are in row 2, and the remainder are in one other row.
4. Of the small goblets, 1 is in row 4, 1 is in row 5, and the remainder are in row 3.
5. There is one more blue glass in row 1 than there is in row 6.
6. The 4 rows which each contain more than 1 kind of glass are in sequential order.
7. There are exactly 4 rows which hold exactly 5 glasses each.
8. Only 2 kinds of glasses are each present in only 1 row. (see below for this clue stated differently).
9. No row contains the same number of glasses as its place #.
10. The only row with 3 kinds of glasses (which is the most) is immediately next to both of the only 2 rows which contain exactly 6 glasses each.
11. Of the martini glasses, 1 is in row 4, and the remainder are in row 7.
12. Of the kind of glass which has a handle, 1 is found in row 3, and the remainder are in row 5.

Question: How many kinds of glasses are there, and how many glasses are in each of the kinds?
************************
I think number 8 may be causing many people some confusion. Here I'll state that clue differently, and people can choose the one that makes the best sense to themselves:

8. There is a kind of glass that can't be found in more than one of the rows. In addition, there is another kind of glass that can't be found in more than one of the rows. There are only 2 kinds for which this is true.

where is Sho when you need him... he would have solved this in about 30 seconds.

I on the other hand realized i should be writing down the #'s in the clues and gave up... actually i ran screaming from the room because my mind cannot assimilate math without magic blue smoke escaping.

I myself am not a fan of math, which is why the riddle deals only adding and subtracting, and small numbers at that :)

Okay, I did it twice, and ended up with the same wrong answer both times. :( (I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but at least I'm consistent about it.)
