Drugs
Hunter was right...
Nothing specific about drugs - the whole big wide topic - are you a user? - what, how often? - should they be legalised? ethics etc. etc...
(Not that I'm looking to stir things up...)

Lol, what's in a name?
Yeah, Used to be a "user". haven't taken any drugs for a few years, just cuz I didn't feel like it.
I think that there's certain types of drugs out there that are less dangerous than alcohol. Mariuhana for example. (OK, I'm dutch, so it's semi legal here).
But cocaine too. many people take some in weekends and not even every weekend. I knew a lot of ppl who used it for several years and had responsible jobs. They used coke instead of alcohol for the same reasons as I did. Not loosing control and no hangovers. Ofcourse there's plenty people who do abuse it and got addicted or are having problems due to using them too frequently, but still, alcohol does the same.
I'm not pro-drugs tho. There's a lotta drugs out there people really shouldn't use. Heroine, crack, but even speed, LSD, XTC to name but a few. Especially LSD is considered harmless by some, but I've experienced some really crazy things. Some people became extremely agressive and were out of control. XTC is considered quite harmless here, and it's not a great deal if you use it once or twice, but many (most)people use it regularly, to the point of addiction, and then UR "fucked". I've had friends who did, and I broke every contact with them, as they slid downhill way too fast. So drugs themselves aren't that bad, but many people just can't cope with them. But that's the same problem with alcohol, gambling and whatever more is is out there.
One more thing: when you drink alcohol, you know what you get, but there's a lot of messing around in the production of drugs, too many imputities, etc... There's no one who's checking the drugs for quality, so the quality of drugs is something you can never be sure of.

I sometimes smoke marijuana and hasch, but would never touch anything else. (Allright, I tried shrooms once and it was a great experience, but I will never do it again since I understood that it can actually alter your perception if you get hooked on it.)
Even though I think crimes for possessing cannabis should be small enough to have any real effect I'm against making it legal.
Making cannabis legal would be to send out a message that this stuff is harmless, and it isn't. Many of my close friends have destroyed their lives because of drugs and cannabis was their connection to heavier drugs.
Fact is, if alcohol wasn't a part of our culture and would be introduced today there is no way in hell that it would become legal. The only reason it still is legal is that the politicians know that it would be political suicide to try to win an election with the argument of banning alcohol.
Still, as it is with alcohol, you must have a natural habit to fall into addictions to risk becoming an addict.
As long as you don't have that weakness or start taking drugs to escape some problem or something I don't think cannabis constitutes any real danger.

As in the alcohol thread, I used drugs, too. Let's say I abused them, lots of them. It's easier to mention the ones I haven't done: heroin and methadone. Drugs were an every day recreation, and my favorite was LSD. Cocaine was never a problem for me because it was very expensive. There was no chance to get hooked on it. The same 13 1/2 years applies to drugs. Clean and sober, that's me. I don't feel any better, though. It still sucks to get up in the morning. Amazingly, I have shown no ill effects from all the chemicals that went into my body and brain. All through the usage, I was functioning at high levels.
The list I have done: pot, hashish, opium, methadrine, LSD, THC, mushrooms, ups, downs, cocaine, crack, amyl nitrate, PCP, mescaline

I suppose...
Considering I started this, I suppose I should state my position...
As a rule, I only touch it if it's natural. I used to smoke a lot of weed, but less so recently. I've tried shrooms - but then they became fashionable again, so i stopped...
Personally, I've always been (lucky enough to be) pretty happy, so have never desired big 'highs', and I don't have an addictive personality.
Having lived in London all my life, I see drugs all round me. Some of my friends are heavy users. I had one friend who killed herself over a year ago now - a mix of smack and depression. It's shocked the heavisest user I know to give up everything (except fags and alcohol)...
As for legalisation, the way I see it, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter why someone is addicted - just that they are, and if they want help, it should be given to them. From my experience, addicts to hard drugs are usually those with depression, they need help rather than to be scorned by the public.
And anyway, legalisation would ensure the purity of harder drugs, so improve safety, and it may help stop crime, by reducing the level of drug-related crime. (i.e: people stealing for their addiction)

Yeah...it's hard to give up the fags

I see your point about legalizing drugs to make sure that addicts gets proper health care etc., but I'm not sure if works that way.
But you could also make it legal to consume drugs, while keeping hard penalties on creating them.

I myself don't do drugs, since it screws up your mind, you can lose your control, you can get addicted. I don't want to spend my money on something stupid like that, etc..etc, and I won't have the courage to buy one
.
But I am not against drugs. If people wanna smoke pot or what ever, that is none of my business. It is a free country (referring to most countries in the western worlds) so people can do drugs or don't do drugs. I don't really care. Cigarettes are also drugs, perhaps even worse then pot since it is way more addictive and more people use it.
I hate the smell of a cigarette and when someone smokes I ask them to blow the smoke not towards me, or I just go sit somewhere else. If my girlfriend would smoke I would break up immediatly since the smell is so disgusting.. imagine kissing someone who has just smoked.. EEEHRG!

Never will touch tobacco. I drink, but only non-beer. And I've done weed twice, with about a year separating the two times. I don't find pot all that bad. It stinks, and would therefore never want to use it so often that I smell that way, but I haven't seen any other negative effects from moderate use. All it makes me do is giggle a lot and steal all the donuts...
I don't think I would ever do anything other than pot. If what people fear about pot is it's gateway to other drugs quality, then fine, I just won't use other drugs.

I used to smoke, but that was over two years ago now. I just put down my fag one day, and that was it. I was lucky I suppose, I never really got addicted.
But I'm the same now - I don't like the smell. I don't mind in pubs or clubs, but I HATE
it when I'm eating - it ruins the taste of the fiood (smell being 80% of taste) I also could never be in a relationship with someone who smokes
