You can only be invited to join gmail too, or could only be. It's just how google works. They probably want to slow people joining so it doesn't blow their servers.

Gmail is open to everyone now I think, I have quite a few Gmail addresses :D
They used to be invite only though, I remember having to wait for my first invite!

I'm pretty sure Google operates a bit like Demonoid does - it's invite only for awhile, then they throw the floodgates open, then they shut them and it's back to invite only, etc.

At one point, Facebook used to work similarly. You had to be invited and you could only join with a school email address.

Anyone can have a Gmail account now. It was by invitation for a while, but not in a long time.
Google+ is in a trial phase though and is invitation only. You can register with them to ask for a slot and they'll get back to you.

Google+ is pretty cool if you've got a droid and possibly some other smart phones. It's almost exactly like Facebook except there are a lot more privacy options and you can group chat and video chat (I think) from your phone. Oh, and there are no annoying games requests...yet.
