Welcome to the world stage, cdls - where our country is despised across the modern and primitive world alike. It's a shitty feeling, isn't it?

Don't worry, though. China is on the ascent, and we're burying ourselves under the neolithic rot of Christian extremism. We won't be anything noteworthy 100 years from now after the evolution-deniers successfully get reason banned from our schools, and Social Security/Medicare has bankrupted us to the point of forced isolationism. The heat will be off.

Oh, and at least we're not French.

There's been rumors that a hidden nuke will explode somewhere in Europe if Bin Laden was ever caught. Crazy conspiracy theory incoming but wouldn't it be much easier for the US to secretly bring a WMD into Europe or assemble one there than any terrorist organization? They could blow it up and then blame any middle-eastern country or even North Korea for that matter and get an excuse to nuke them right back.

Often when I go outside I'm wondering would it actually help to duck and cover if you saw a flash, it would of course depend on how close you were to the hypocenter and if there's stuff like stone walls on the way. There was some talking at school that if there is a hidden nuke, it's unlikely to be in Finland because who cares about Finland anyway? But countries could start nuking each other back and forth and blow up the planet or at least cause a nuclear winter and trouble with the fallout.

Same.

Me, on the other hand.
Well, actually, they're more likely to go over to Washington, D.C., than in Florida where I live, although we have some decent-size urban centers. I think if they do come for us, though, they'll especially go for New York City, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and those other bigger-name cities. Not that Orlando and Miami aren't big-name, but....eh....I'M TRYING TO BE OPTIMISTIC, OKAY?! DON'T GET SO WORKED UP.
-weird mood-
But whatever.

I'm still being a skeptic towards this one. Why did they dump off the remains right away, rather than confirm through testing that it actually was him? Not to mention: just because he's dead doesn't mean the whole structure's going to collapse. I think this is especially the case considering the religious radicals he led. If his death is actually valid, won't they declare him a martyr and subject us (the U.S.) to x years of living hell in order to proclaim his greatness and the omnipotence of Allah, or something like that? What's going to stop them from leading another attack in honor of his death? They hate America anyway; they've told us that several times: 9/11, the anthrax biological warfare (and I'm sure they have smallpox in their stores too), and I think they've actually outright publicly declared it.

Maybe I'm being a pessimist here (so much for optimism ), but I don't want to get my own hopes too high. I guess I take that saying "Expect the worst, hope for the best" to heart, except what's best? Is it best to have wanted a man dead and to have gotten that wish?

That's my spiel for tonight.

They did (apparently) confirm his identity through a DNA test.

I have been on the 'world stage' for a long, long time now ;)

And I don't really get the shitty feeling, more like an amused annoyance at certain comments. To have the shitty feeling, I would have to actually care about the opinion of the person/people expressing them, and quite honestly...I don't.

I do find it disheartening that most people don't see the positive in this, and instead jump to the "it isn't gonna end terrorism" speech.

Yes, there is that at least...

It is obvious that these people forget Bin Ladens organization was also responsible for the bombings in London, oh wait, that was just another American conspiracy "To buy more political allegiance" right?

The only comparison you can make regarding Hitler and Bin Laden is that they were killed on the same day, so many years apart. As to why they "dumped" his body so fast is that it is required according to their Religion to be buried within Twenty Four hours of death. They did do DNA testing on him before this, our President wanted to be sure of it before he announced it.

Now, we all know that this is not an end to Terrorism or the war being fought in Afghanistan.

A too ready employment of this strategy is probably the reason why people started thinking they'd need bombs for their opinions to be taken seriously.

Anyway, I think the important part about Joo's statement is the part outside the hyphens.

Well done, you're celebrating because someone [...] has died.

I don't think Osama Bin Laden will be missed by the world very much and killing instead of capturing him is probably the most pragmatic solution in the long run. What I am uneasy about though is the general gloating about the killing. The behaviour seen (including this thread's title) seems much more fitting for a won sports match than a matter of life and death. It's a good thing that his body has been disposed of since I suspect that otherwise some people would have wanted to drink champagne out of his skull.

This is what I've been thinking since the news broke. Gloating and celebrating were the words in my mind. I really am sorry for anyone that lost someone in any terrorist attack and mean no disrespect to them. But this whole news frenzy has made me wonder yet again where humanity is going.

And Madrid. It pisses me off to unbelieveable levels that people keep forgetting about what happened here, as if it was less important than what happened in US or London.

Well, my understanding was they gave him the opportunity to surrender, and they fired shots back instead. Which doesn't really surprise me given what the alternative was for him. I, for one am glad he was killed in the raid, simply so we do not have to see "serious" people on the tee vee debate how we ought to parade him naked through the streets for everyone to burn with lit cigarettes, against their token "liberal" counterpart who will state how inhumane this is, and how we really ought to be civilized and stick to just flogging him with dildos.

Those that would use bombs or similar tactics make me care even less about their opinions. Nothing more than a two year old throwing a tantrum at a much, much more extreme level.

Piscator wrote:The behaviour seen (including this thread's title) seems much more fitting for a won sports match than a matter of life and death.

The title of the thread was deliberate, as was its tone. Perhaps I will explain why later, when I am not so worn out.

I didn't forget (not that it helps at all) but I feel the biggest cause of this is the media as well as the incident was (if reported correctly) inspired by al-Qaeda and not carried out by them themselves. Still, by either inspiring or having hands on causation, they carry a definite amount of responsibility.

Have you forgotten how many people danced in the streets of their country when the Twin Towers fell? They danced, celebrated and burned American Flags when that happened, they were not celebrating the felling of some buildings, they were celebrating the fact that someone had just killed and injured over six thousand people (killed three thousand and injured six.) but it is wrong for us to celebrate the death of a single man who was the cause of pain and suffering throughout the world?

Osama was using his youngest wife as a human shield, he was firing his weapon at the soldiers that went in there. Kill or be killed, glad that they killed him and very happy that they got out of that compound without a single soldier being killed.

Humanity isn't really going anywhere. It's always been like this. In one way or another, it probably always will be.

So basically you're saying that if supporters of terrorism are doing it, it can't be wrong?
