I am catching up on Academy Award Best Picture nominees. In the last couple of days, I have seen:

• Moneyball - solid sports story
• The Help - really enjoyed it!

I saw Midnight in Paris in the theater, so that leaves six more films to see in the next three weeks.

Star Wars Episode 1 in 3-D

It was better than I remembered it. (I don't think I've seen it since it was in theaters the first time)

^ That! Loved it and loved seeing the amazement on my daughter's face. She is already familiar with the games (KOTOR etc) and the animations, but this was her first proper film experience and she loved every second of it.

My kids were excited about it. :) And that's what really matters.

• The Tree of Life - boring. It was OK when the actors were allowed to do their thing, but the long montages and guilty brooding stopped any momentum the story had.

I saw Jack and Jill while it was in theaters with the rest of the clarinet section. It was okay. Rather strange, but it had some funny moments. I think I posted about it, but either it was deleted or it was in the TotD thread. Maybe both.

I saw the Hunger Games today. Once you got past all the craziness in the theater lobby, it was an enjoyable experience. They did a very good job at keeping it true to the book (although there were a few specific parts that weren't in the movie but were in the book, but that's to be expected). Overall, a great movie.

• The Hunger Games - very enjoyable. Jennifer Lawrence is excellent, as anyone who has seen Winter's Bone would expect. The movie inspired me listen to the audiobooks of the series, which I had bought a while ago.

I saw Phantom Menace in 3D, and I'll warn you - 2D movies converted to 3D are poor representations of 3D. Avatar, which was shot in 3D, was orders of magnitude better. I won't spend my money watching converted 2D films again.

Just saying, so you can lower your expectations.

Sadly, I could point out several differences D;

Never read the books, But seen Hunger Games when it came out. I am really not into those types of movies, but I was really surprised, in a positive way. The story line behind the movie was more of a focus than the 'games' part.. The 'games' actually were part of the story.. I really enjoyed it.

Well duh. They can't put everything from the book into the movie.

SPOILER ALERT WARNING. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK AND SEEN THE MOVIE.

I was kind of disappointed when Katniss didn't get the sleeping syrup in the movie to drug Peeta with. I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THAT!!! And I was also disappointed that the mutts didn't look like the other tributes, like they did in the book. But I thought most of the rest of it was consistent. -nods-
