Take Turns Writing Story: Cantr Style

Postby rklenseth » Tue Mar 16, 2004 5:03 am

Came across this idea on another forum and I thought it would be cool to apply to our little Cantr world. Just continue the story from where the last person left off. Lets make this the Cantr Epic.

Alright here it begins.....

Here he was at the edge of no and where. He did not know his name, what he was, or where he came from. Not that it mattered.

It was cold. The wind swept across the desert landscape making the sand seem like it was dancing. The wind played around with his amber hair.

He wore nothing and the cold was biting at his skin. It cut through him like a knife to warm butter. At his feet was a silver key. To where the key went to he did not know.

The key glimmered in the moonlight and it was reflected in his dark eyes. He kneeled down and picked up the key. It was freezing cold to his skin. The cold almost burned him but he did not drop it.

He examined it with a careful eye. A small inscription was etched into the silver key. It read, 'To one that finds this key will find the secret to life'....

"This is grand," he thought as a gust of icy wind made him shiver. "Secret of life? I'd settle for a pair of pants and a cup of coffee."

He rubbed the key hopefully, but no mystical wish-granting genie appeared. The key did warm up a bit, so it no longer bit into his hand. He sighed and started trudging resolutely across the plain.

And so he walked through the desert. His arms were crossed across his chest trying to keep warm.

The sand was blinding him but up ahead he thought he saw a figure lying on the ground. He began to trudge toward it.

It was definitely a man lying there. Or was a man. Now it was just a skeleton with tattered pieces of clothing flirting with the wind.

"Well, my friend, you won't be needing those anymore I see," he said as he kneeled down to examine the corpse.

He tugged off the pieces of clothing which consisted of a pair of leather breeches, a silk shirt, and a fur coat made of various animal skins. He donned his new outfit and smiled.

He tried to put on the man's boots but they were to small and there were obvious holes on the bottoms of the soles. He threw them to the side.

He searched the skeleton some more and found a ring on the man's finger on his left hand. He slipped the ring off the skeleton finger and held it up to the moonlight. A red gem sparkled in the moonlight set into the white gold ring. He examined the ring some more and finding nothing of interest, slid it into a front pocket of the silk shirt.

The search of the rest of skeleton only came up with a pouch of moldy fruit which he discarded the fruit with the boots and slung the pouch across his shoulder.

The moon had begun to set in the distance and a dim light of dawn began to rise from across the horizon.

"Now which direction to pick," he said to himself.

He treked across the barren land for many days, starving and struggling forward during the day and laying curled in a ball through the cold nights. With every step he got weaker and weaker, his muscles threatened to seize up from last of nourishment. Then, on the 6 or 7 day, hunger had clouded his mind and numbed his thoughts, a new feel came to him in the air, the touch of moisture in the air.

Slowly, he realized that he heard water and looked up to see that he had stopped just short of a beach where waves were slowly rolling up and down the sand. To his right the beach continued, to his left in the distance he could make out tall green objects...turning to the left he walked onward, keeping his eyes locked on the not so distance forest and the secrets it held...

..Secrets that hopefully included food. Not much to drink at the beach, something inside him muttered.

As he approached the forest, he began noticing dark clouds perched on the horizon. A few fat spatters of rain began pummeling the dusty path towards the woods. He let out a whoop, though it came out a dusty cough, and tilted his head upwards, letting the drops run over his face and into his mouth.

The rain kept coming faster, though, weighing down his fur cloak and plastering the silk shirt to his chest.

"Who wears fur with silk, anyway?" he thought disgustedly. "That idiot in the desert deserved to die."

And so it began, the rain, lasting day and night for days on end.

A bluish berry and wood, all that were to be had from this miserable place where he now rested. Setting himself down under the large tree he used as shelter he takes the items he had found from the pocket of the silk shirt and examines them closer, the key the same as he found it, except it wasnt the same bitting cold only slighty chill due to the downpour of rain.

The ring of white gold and the redish ruby set in it, now that was a piece of work to him.

Soon the rain began to slow to a mild drizzle. He decides to look around to see where he is. He starts walking through thick brush, small twigs scrapping his legs bringing blood. He steps down hard on a rock "Ouch" echos through the woods. He looks close at the rock and see's that it has one sharp edge. He takes a quick look around and finds a low branch. Using the rock to cut the brach and sharpening one end of it, he now has a weapon
"well it aint much, but it will have to do" He says to him self. He decides to find a safe place for the night. Upon searching he finds he is now going up hill, and as he moves on the woods get thicker and thicker, soon he can no longer see the sky. He notices a cave in the distance and he decides to stake it out. He climbes a tree and sits. Waiting for its in habbitant to return. "food" he thinks holding his little sharp stick. Minutes turn to hours with on animals in sight.
He climbs down to investigate the cave. He enters it to find it empty, but it went very deep. He stayed close to the enterance so as not to get lost. He sits down and tried to get some sleep.
As the sun came up, he awoke to find something glimmering from further inside the cave.

"Should I risk going deeper?" he says to him self.....

He paused, not sure he should risk it. After all, he'd only been here for a little while, it's inhabitant could appear at any moment, and turn out to be something angry. He shivers with cold, as the sun is still heating up the earth around him. The glimmering he saw deep inside the cave begins reflecting brighter with the sunlight, drawing him in. He slowly began walking in, listening carefully, with his stick out in front of him, ready in case of a sudden suprise. As he ventured deeper in, the sunlight slowly disappeared. The reflection, or whatever it was began getting brighter. His pace quickened as he kept going further and further in. Suddenly, the glimmer disappeared. He looked back and realized how deep he ventured into the cave. He panicked and began running back the way he came, but came to a fork in the passage. He wasn't sure which way he had gone, and the sunlight was long gone. He chose the left passage, and ended getting more lost than ever. He sat down a moment to think...."What am I going to do now?"
I just can't stop coming back....

"Aahhhh! I'm going to die!", he screams in frustration and sits down on the ground.

Staring into the dark he felt a coldness start to settle into his bones, starting with his butt for some reason. "Now that's weird...", he mutters and reaches one hand back.

Unexpectedly, his fingers touch dampness. He brushes his fingers over the ground. Now they are wet. "Now what is happening...", he sighs and then immediatly jumps up when it dawns on him that the wetness is rain water finding it's way from the cave entrance.

Laughing and crying he drops to his knees and starts crawling forward, keeping his hands in the tiny stream of water that first caught his attention. He didn't go more then 10 feet before the inky blackness of the cave faded away and he found himself once more at the entrance.

"Oh, god I'm saved!" He yells into the dark rain filled sky as he cups his hands to catch enough water to wet his parched throat. He drank until he tired of catching the rain in his hands and then stumbled into the dark forest...food was becoming a serious issue now...

He goes back to the berries which were only but a few, picks a couple and tossed them to the back of his throat. they were only but a tease and he needed something more, something fleshy.
"I am going to need something more than this stick if I am goin to get some meat"..He thinks to himself not realizing he had spoken outloud. He trudges about the small area of woods he is in, frantically looking for something of better use for a weapon.
Suddenly he hears movement in the forest to his right..He stops and listens...the noises sound clumsy and loud and he hears a, a,...no it cant be he thinks..but it is, someone whistleing trudging through the forest.
He dives back into the woods and hides not sure if this is danger or releif.."what should I do, what should I do"..He whispers to himself.
Out of the corner of his eye he chatches a glimmer of his blood on the stone he cut himself with...He reaches out slowly and holds it in his hand...A perfect fit, sharp edge out. The whistle draws near. He whispers.. "What should I do"......
Never hold your farts in. They travel up
your spine, into your brain, and that's where you get shitty ideas from.

As he waits in the underbrush, the sound of footsteps grows louder and he finally makes out a woman walking briskly between the trees. She carries a walking stick in one hand and the other steadies the strap of a bag that hangs from her shoulder. He can see she is eating something and decides that if he isn't going to starve here, he needs that food. His hand clutches the sharp rock tighter and he holds his breath as he waits for her to walk past. As she does, he stands slowly, quietly. Then he springs up from his crouch and leaps at the woman from behind, yelling and brandishing the rock. His face collides cleanly with the walking stick as she swings it in a well practiced arc to meet him.
"I was wondering what you were doing there sitting in a bush," she says to him as he sits on the carpet of leaves and wipes blood from his nose.
"Umm... I was just going to ask you for some food," he says barely audibly. He avoids her eyes.
"What's that? Speak up! If it's food you wanted, you should of just asked." She throws a carrot from her bag at his feet then studies the man with a harsh gaze. "Now get up!"

He stumbles to his feet and stares in womnder at the beautiful woman, the carrot for the moment forgotten though his stomache growls loudly with hunger.

"What are you looking at? EAT the carrot silly man." She starts to move on, intent on her goal, for she is a trader, and the nearest town wishes her to bring back wood. Friendly to a man n\in need only to the extent of giving him food, she ignores his presence and trudges on.....

"Wait!" he calls after her excitedly. Grabbing the carrot at his feet, he breaks it in two and shoves half into his mouth." Where did you get this, what it is? where did you come from?" as he speaks bits of the carrot he chews on fly out of his mouth and land on his shirt front. Half walking- half running he gets along side of her and studies her for a long moment before turning his attention to the path. "Wow you sure are beautiful!" he smiles stupidly after saying as much and trudges along behind her.

She restrains what she has so long missed, since trekking the roads for wishes of silver dishes and years of fishes, no blush yet neither the shy hush would overcome her, and with confidence, "You really think so?"

He stumbles, then quietly mumbles, "Yes, but I haven't seen many-" he silences himself, then thinks to himself, 'Can't be thinking like this.'

The beautiful woman, noble with her resource, yet cold enough to outsource herself from every port with many of a man she has seen.

They trudge on in silence, him eating noisily of the carrot and she quiet as a deer in the forest. And so they walk, and walk and walk....

then quite suddenly, He stumbles over and root in the dirt path and falls against her, his face planting into her chest.....
